Fun Secondary Physics Experiment - Static Electricity

A fun way to discover about positively and negatively charged particles using basic household items. Is it true that opposites attract?

Things you will need:

  • Two blown-up balloons with string attached
  • An aluminium can
  • Some woollen fabric
  • Your hair

What to do:

  • First rub the two balloons one-by-one against the woollen fabric.
  • Then try moving the balloons together. Are they attracted to each other?
  • Rub one of the balloons against your hair then slowly pull it away (do this in front of a mirror so you can see what happens).
  • Put the aluminium can on it's side on a table. Rub the balloon on your hair again then hold the balloon close to the can and watch as it rolls towards it. Slowly move the balloon away from the can and it will follow.

What you will see:

  • By rubbing the balloons against the woollen fabric you have created static electricity. This involves negatively charged particles (which are called electrons) jumping to positively charged objects.
  • When you rub the balloons against the fabric or your hair they become negatively charged, they have taken some of the electrons from the fabric or hair and left them positively charged.
  • It thus appears to be true when we say opposites attract. Your positively charges hair is attracted to the negatively charged balloon and will rise up to meet it.
  • This is also the case with the aluminium can which is drawn to the negatively charged balloon as the area near it becomes positively charged.
