Personal Description:

My name is Moira . I have had extensive experience as a teacher of English (20 years) across the whole ability range, spanning KS3 to A Level. I have also been Head of a large English and Expressive Arts Faculty, and worked as a senior examiner for KS3, GCSE, AS/A2 English Language and English Literature- and still do!. For 10 years, I worked in a university, training post graduate and undergraduate teachers of English. My most recent employment has included: writing course books for English, training teachers in the UK and abroad on how to raise standards in reading and writing, working for various exam boards on English related examination specifications and mark schemes; designing assessment packages for academy chains;. My work as a private tutor has been largely focused on KS3/ GCSE/ AS/A2, but of late it has included some undergraduate and postgraduate work: when working in a university, I was a tutor on the MA/ MEd courses. I also do quite a bit of tutoring connected with basic skills and literacy. I can honestly say that there has been - across all areas of tuition - a 100% success rate. References are available.

Tutoring Experience:

English teacher of English Language, English Literature, basic skills and literacy: KS3, GCSE, AS, A2
Head of English and Expressive Arts
Principal Lecturer (PGCE Secondary English)
Senior Examiner: KS2 and KS3 National Curriculum Tests; GCSE Language; GCSE Literature; Fuctional Skills; AS Language; A2 Language; A2 Literature
Assistant Principal : Whole school responsibility for English, Special Educational Needs, Literacy.

Tutoring Approach:

Tailored tuition sessions are delivered at a pace that is appropriate to the learner, but firmly contextualised within the particular examination requirements or ultimate goal. The focus is firmly on ongoing progress.
An initial assessment is carried out, so as to determine the learner's strengths and weaknesses , with these then informing the subsequent teaching/learning programme. A variety of teaching methods are used - all aimed to ensure a steady increase in knowledge, skills and understanding. Previous tutees have variously described my working methods as 'engaging… highly effective … rigorous… ' I would like to describe myself as friendly and reassuring!
