I've always enjoyed science and finding out how things work and why - but I especially love being able to teach others and share my knowledge and passion with them so they too cannot only see how things work but have the tools to understand why they do as well.
I was fascinated about how things were made when I was studying my Chemistry, Maths and Physics A levels and seeing things actually happen with the reactions we undertook and wanted to learn more. So, for my Bachelors Honours Degree I chose Chemistry and studied at the University of Nottingham. In the first year of my Chemistry degree, I also studied the first year degree level Maths, Medicine, Biochemistry and Physics to compliment the Chemistry Bachelors Honours degree, as I really enjoy science. This continued in my second and final years of my degree in Chemistry where I studied the compulsory Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry with the addition of Medicinal Chemistry, Drug Synthesis and Applications, Biochemistry and Astral and Solar Chemistry. It was also compulsory in my second year for continuation into the final year of my course, to complete courses and pass exams in both reading, translating and extracting information from scientific German and complete a Computing project.
Before I had finished my B.Sc (Hons) in Chemistry I had already decided that I still wanted to know more and went on to complete my Doctorate in Synthetic Organic Chemistry at the University of Southampton as well as doing a year as a Post-Doctorate as well ! My Doctorate covered areas to design and make drugs for cancer research, cell growth / growth factors and wound healing which was ground breaking at this time with the methods which I was designing and working on. The research I completed enabled numerous papers to be published and cited in many others, as work they had referred to. The research I completed has been used within these fields to aid others in their research, treatment and drug identification.
I currently run my own business and am a Consultant advising a wide range of Clients on health and safety / occupational health as well as training, teaching them in health and safety and am an external examiner in the areas of Health and Safety and Occupational Health. My science background is so often used, so I can draw on the knowledge and experience which I already have, which is great.
Additionally, I have held for many years a teaching qualification - professional trainers certificate.
I offer tuition for those who are home schooled and also those who attend school but wish additional support with their studies.
When my niece was preparing for her Science GCSEs, I helped with some Chemistry tuition via the 'phone and after the first session she asked if I could be her Science and Chemistry teacher from now on !!
Also, I provide tuition to those who are preparing to take their Common Entrance Exams for 11+, 12+ and 13+. At 11+ they usually take Maths and English. Some require science as well and I tutor the Maths, English and the Sciences (Chemistry, Biology and Physics) for 11+, 12+ and 13+. Entrance exams are usually taken around January, May / June and November each year and form a key requirement for a number of schools where students are transferring to senior school at either of these ages.
There was an opportunity within one of the companies I worked at for you to volunteer in your lunch hour to teach reading, writing and maths to those at primary level and I did so, happy to give up my lunch hour on many a week day to spend valuable time helping those who were wanting to learn more and were finding it hard to do so without some one to one focus. I loved seeing how they started to shine with some time and input at their pace.
I have been an external examiner and marker for many years for those qualifying in Health and Safety and Occupational Health and tutoring other employees on how to deliver accredited and non-accredited training courses.
I have experience of demonstrating science and the practical aspects to undergraduates in Chemistry as well as proof reading many a Postgraduate and Undergraduate thesis and essays.
From my years of teaching, I am very aware that everyone learns differently so I always adapt my teaching to my students. The most important part is to find out what way works for each student and use that approach so that they are really able to understand what they are studying as this then enables them to work towards the marks that they want. I am relaxed, calm and encouraging and have a good background in getting each student to perform to the best of their abilities. Where a student finds any part of a subject particularly hard or they just don't seem to understand aspects of it, then I establish what it is they struggle with and look for other examples or ways of approaching the problem to find the specific way that "clicks" with them. This approach has always worked, with many students now understanding topics that they thought they wouldn't until they came to me for tuition. The feedback from parents of my students clearly demonstrates that my tutoring approach works for each of their children as it is designed purely around their specific needs. Thus, it has enabled them all to achieve excellent grades at the associated studying level for each student and successfully be able to progress onto their next stage with confidence.

Karen is an amazing tutor and we would highly recommend her to anyone seeking support with A Level chemistry.
Thanks lots Karen for all your hard work and patience while working with Jaccs.
Her approach to teaching is very precise and practical which helps her students to progress with confidence and enthusiasm in their subjects.
I had never tried online tutoring before as I was slightly unsure as how it would work out but Karen made it easy, simple and reliable.
Overall, a great experience!
I really enjoy supporting her and she is always engaged, listens well and works hard in our time together which is very positive. She has made some excellent progress with her physics whilst we have been going through the aspects within the topics she finds the hardest and then doing lots of practice exam style questions together during the lessons too which has really helped her confidence.
Karen is always punctual with the timings, she starts the sessions on time. She extends help beyond the sessions. Both my children secured A grade in their final exams. A big thank you to Karen that my younger child has now proceeded to do Chemistry for her A levels and is enjoying the subject. Karen has lots of patience and always tailors her lessons according to the student's needs. She listen to parent's views and delivers accordingly. She engages with students and encourages their participation. Besides these personal attributes words fall short to explain the grasp she has on Chemistry . Both my children are continuing as her tutees.
They both work hard in our lessons and ensure they understand concepts and aspects of each topic to the full which is very great. Asking questions where needed. They both clearly working hard outside of our lessons, as well as in them. I really enjoy tutoring them both as their work ethic is very positive and engaging, so it makes working with them easier and thoroughly enjoyable.
You emailed me on Friday 19th and I was away over the weekend as it is the school holidays so was not able to reply to you until my call to your mobile, Monday 21st in the morning (I left a message on your voicemail). I have also replied directly to your email as well, following my tutoring today of other students. Many thanks Karen
She is enthusiastic, knowledgeable and supportive.
My daughter has found her help invaluable and is now soon to be sitting her AS chemistry exam feeling more confident and prepared.
You always work hard in our lessons and ensure you understand concepts and aspects of each topic to the full which is very great. I enjoy tutoring you as your work ethic is very positive - clearly working hard outside of our lessons, as well as in them. Additionally, your belief in your own abilities is growing too.
Karen delivers her tutorial with clarity and straight to the point. Her materials are well prepared and organized hence easy to follow especially through an online media such as Skype. Karen provides timely, constructive feedbacks on home works which in turn have challenged my daughter to do better each time. In such a short time my daughter’s comprehension in these 2 subjects is evident. I highly recommend Karen as an excellent tutor.
As a parent I have found her feedback on his progress clear and comprehensive.
Hard to give a higher rating after a short time but I am confident that he is benefiting and would be happy to provide further feedback in future.
Dec 2016 : -Thank you for providing feedback for my tutoring of your son over the last few months. He has made some excellent progress with the topics which he listed as requiring support with and it is clear that he is now much more confident with tackling A2 and AS chemistry questions which have these aspects in them. We have also worked on a number of other areas which have come to light as shortfalls in his knowledge and worked on these too so that he can now answer questions more fully to gain maximum marks. Please feel free to provide further feedback at a later stage after more tutoring has taken place.
She always works hard in her lessons with me and is keen to understand concepts and aspects of her subjects to the full which is very positive and great. I enjoy tutoring her as her work ethic is very positive and clearly works hard outside of the lessons as well as in them. She asks questions beyond her level, so she is interested in finding out more about the subjects which clearly shows that her confidence is improving. Additionally, her belief in her own abilities is growing too.
Karen makes everything very clear and her explaning is very easy to understand. She is experienced and can easily pick out what needs improving. I highly recommend Karen .
Thank you so much, Tosin.
Our daughter had missed a lot of school and needed to catch up quite a lot and Karen has been fabulous at helping in a professional and calm manner to plug the gaps in learning.
I asked our daughter to give feedback and she said - 'Karen is amazing at explaining things and I actually feel enthusiastic about Chemistry now'.
We would highly recommend Karen!
I am pleased that your daughter is finding the tuition via Skype to be working out well. Her work is excellent as she focusses on her studies whilst we are together and the homework set is completed very well. Keep up the good work.
Olivia's physics has improved and she definitely is much more confident in the topics we have covered so far because she now understands them much more which is the key to studying all subjects. I enjoy the tutoring sessions with Olivia as she is engaging, works hard and wants to really understand the information she needs for doing well in her forthcoming physics GCSE.
My daughter enjoys her sessions with Karen very much and we are hoping that she will be able to take lessons during her A-Levels as well.
Thank you for your feedback - I have thoroughly enjoyed tutoring both your sons who have been engaged and focussed through out their tutoring time with me and completed all the homework set, which is really positive at their ages.
Thank you for taking the time to complete your feedback regarding my tutoring of Ange and I'm pleased that she already feels benefit after a few sessions of tutoring. Best wishes Karen
Time will tell if my child builds up a love for the sciences - I have always said that its not the subject but the person who teaches it. In this case I believe that my child will build that love for the subjects because the teacher makes it interesting.
The group are interested and really enjoy the practicals using everyday items from home to support the learning and I enjoy teaching them.
