English (Foreign Language)
I am an experienced personal tutor with an MA in English from Oxford and a PhD. I have a strong record of success at all levels, from 11+ through GCSE to A2, as well as with young children and adults. My pupils include those with dyslexia or whose first language is not English. I am familiar with SATs and independent schools' entrance exams, and have a TEFL qualification. A distinctive aspect of my work is the high quality of individually tailored materials I produce both for use in lessons and for each pupil's complementary study alone.
As well as supporting pupils who are in school, I have put several pupils who are out of school (for one reason or another) through English Language and Literature GCSEs and A-levels, taking sole responsibility for managing their learning and exam preparation.
I have a current CRB certificate.
I am happy to teach English at any level:
- for exams (SATs, 11+, independent school entrance, GCSE, A-level, degree);
- for stimulation and enrichment (for example, to those children whose parents feel they are not getting all they need in class);
- to improve the level of schoolwork generally (for example, focusing on writing, comprehension and essay-structuring in subjects other than English);
- reading and writing beyond education (for example, where English is a second language, or a particularly challenging task in the way of, say, a job application or formal statement is being faced).
I also teach verbal and non-verbal reasoning; and subjects other than English (including Maths and French) at primary- or prep-school level.
The purpose of a private tutor is to address individual problems and goals. My work will support schoolwork (where appropriate) by providing a fresh approach and a lively and friendly personal engagement. Whilst always bearing in mind the arc of a pupil's needs, especially when approaching an exam, I plan each lesson only after the last. This enables me to focus continually on how to help individuals move forward. I have a wide range of materials and am constantly creating and discovering more.
Formerly a registered child-minder, I find that some of the qualities needed in either field serve both: energy and reliability, of course; but also an ability to assess needs, flexibility in responding to them, and ease in relating to children of all ages.
The charges published opposite are for continuous tuition (for a period or indefinitely). I am very happy to adapt to the needs of those pupils who want to observe school holidays or who want irrregular or occasional sessions.

Charlotte has always prepared relevant work and homework so that my daughter can get the most from each session, she has a good selection of learning materials to work with.
Finally, as my daughter lacks confidence in her own ability and tends to be quite self critical, Charlotte is always positive and very gentle with any suggestions for improvement.
I would recommend Charlotte's approach and methods which I am sure will prove beneficial to my son's education.
Will update again in due course.
All the new English skills I have learnt from the period of time studying with Charlotte I can use the skills in my every day and work life.
I cannot thank Charlotte enough. I would recommend Charlotte to any adult wanting to improve their English written skills.
Charlotte adapts herself seamlessly to the client's needs and has offered great flexibility in extra session times, also during holidays. We are grateful for her patience and support!
My son warmed to Charlotte immediately and looks forward to his regular weekly lessons with her. My son says, "Charlotte is clever, kind and a good teacher"
I am pleased to have found Charlotte through First Tutors… I chose her above other teachers due to her such high rating . No doubt why all her ratings are 5 stars.
I would highly recommend her.
***UPDATE*** I got an A*! With 96% across A2, and full **Telephone Number Removed** s on my A2 exam, I absolutely could not have done it without her, we went through the subject material, syllabus and we always worked to find out what I needed to do to succeed. With Charlotte's help I got this in a single year (I did the A-level intensively), and without having done English for at least 2 years.
She is interested in my son and very much works with him. She is sensitive,thoughtful and supportive in her approach. She clearly reflects on the lesson just gone in preparation for the next one. My son particularly likes her choices of poetry and reading material; which he seems to connect with. He tells me, he barely notices the hour go by! That is some compliment from a 14-year-old boy!
My son likes her method of teaching as she is supportive. She encourages him to push his boundaries be it reading or vocabulary. He has started liking the subject more after Charlotte started tutoring him.
She has been teaching my twins for nearly 5months now with a view to preparing them for the 11+ entrance exams. Although, the result of that is not known yet we have been thoroughly impressed by Charlotte and would highly recommend her to others looking for somebody to supplement their child's primary education/prepare them for 11+ entrance exams.
Preparing the lesions before and she answers all my questions . She is a professional teacher .
She has helped my child to sharpen his skills for the English 11+ exam.
Charlotte is really flexible with accommodating my son’s need (i.e. written English and poetry), understanding and patient. She has a serious side but jovial too at the same time, making learning both effective, motivating and encouraging.
I completely agree with my daughter. Charlotte is a talented tutor, with apparently inexhaustible patience and sense of humour. I am enjoying learning with her, and with her help I feel equal to taking the exam at my advanced age, and in the compressed timescale necessary (AS and A2 in one year). Her intelligence, wit, and work ethic have exceeded our expectations. Her fees are extremely reasonable for the value provided, and we feel very lucky to have found her. Anyone deciding to make use of her services will have made a very fortunate choice indeed.
We have just received our results, and both my daughter and I were awarded A* (94% and 96%). When I say that this was a new A-level course, with no past papers, few recommended resources, and that the course textbook was not available until six weeks before the exams, you will see what an incredible job Charlotte pulled off for us. She effectively constructed a course for us using her experience and breadth of knowledge, and gave us the capability to perform far beyond our expectations of ourselves. As a result, my daughter will start at her first-choice university in a few weeks, and her academic life is back on track. Thank you seems inadequate. Anyone lucky enough to be tutored by Charlotte will have the rare privilege of experiencing teaching at its best, and will also have a rewarding experience, but first and foremost will have fun.
thank you for all your efforts in helping my daughter progress through the IGCSE programe. Your lessons are always so well planned its clear you have a passion for the subject, that's obvious as when my daughter leaves your lessons she is soenthused with the topics discussed. I would highly recommend any parent reading this feedback to consider their child for tutoring in English Language with you.
She is using a variety of teaching tools and concepts, and has a lot of patience to answer all of my questions. By motivating me to work harder, Charlotte helps me to develop my language skills.
Having lessons with Charlotte is a pleasure and I can highly recommend her to be your tutor!
Charlotte is knowledgeable and has shown great commitment in delivering quality tuition to help with exam preparation. An excellent choice made.
I (being non-native English speaker) did approach Charlotte and another tutor specifically to help my son with 8+ entrance exams and within few days, she won our hearts with her positive attitude, teaching style. She is very professional person and quite approachable.
I am very pleased with my son's progress so far ,who now has learnt various techniques of story writing & comprehension . Last but not least, my son always looks forward meeting her twice a week , which shows how enjoyable lessons must be for him. :)
Charlotte always comes very well prepared with content tailored to our two daughters' specific requirements. She selects topics which are not only relevant to the respective teaching goals of our daughters but the topics are also very interesting and our girls are always excited about her classes as Charlotte manages to find books/stories appropriate to the childrens' ages and interests. She has a very calm and patient manner while commanding the kids' respect. Our daughters have made significant reading, writing and comprehension improvements since taking up classes with Charlotte 4 months ago
Alex happy to do the extra lessons which is great.
Charlotte is a great tutor; she is always fully prepared for every lesson, has a lot of useful material and makes her own notes to aid my learning. I thoroughly enjoy my lessons as they are always very well structured and I improve on my ability in English with every lesson. I would definitely recommend Charlotte to anyone considering tuition in English.
Charlotte is a brilliant tutor. Charlotte always came fully prepared and rather than using a book, as many tutors do, Charlotte typed up her own notes for each and every session to ensure the lessons were personal and fitted my requirements. She reviewed my work, had interesting aids in teaching and structured the lessons to my needs. My English has greatly improved.
I would definitely recommend Charlotte.
