Personal Description:
I've been interested in computers from a young age and would like to help anyone making their way into the world of Computer Science. I worked as an IT Consultant and Network Engineer for several law firms, and have a BSc in Physics and a MSc in the Physics and Technology of Nuclear Reactors. I want to focus my tutoring on Computer Science, but many Maths and Science degrees now also include modules on computing (C++, Fortran, Python etc).
I use several programming languages on a daily basis: Fortran, Python and PHP. On occasions, I also have to edit or create programs using Java, C and C++. I enjoy the creative aspect of programming, as you're building something from scratch that will hopefully help others.
I recently published a peer reviewed article with the journal of Computer Physics Communications titled "Activity computer program for calculating ion irradiation activation", where I derived a new set of activity equations and implemented them with a program written in Fortran. I also like to upload new programs and scripts to my github site and my personal website whenever I have the chance.
Outside of work/tutoring, I enjoy spending time with my family. I like practical project as well; I've built all the computer and servers in my house, and (moving away from IT) I recently converted an Ambulance to a camper van. It allows me to take my son and my wife away on holidays to explore the beautiful views this country has to offer.
Training Experience:
I worked for two companies over a period of 7-8 years, where I was involved in the day to day IT work load, which included maintaining databases, the company networks, writing website etc. While at University, I have also relied heavily on computers. I have developed several Fortran programs, a number of python scripts and I host a website that I created using PHP and MySQL to share my code (as well as it being available on github). I have used Windows PCs and Windows Servers in the past, but I now favour Linux. I use an Ubuntu derivative day to day, and I often use the HPC in Birmingham and the National Supercomputer in Edinburgh (remotely; both of these run Linux).
Training Approach:
I have set up an office with several Linux computers to be used by students during tutoring. They have C++/Fortran compilers, Python2/3, Netbeans/Android Studio/Eclipse and PHP installed. They are fast, and will give hands on experience without having to buy new equipment, download and install compilers yourself.

My son has grown in confidence and now feels he is able to continue with this GCSE subject. My son was on the verge of giving up beforehand.
Thank you Ben, you really have made a huge difference.
Thanks again !
