Do you ever feel like understanding something new is a burden, while others seem to have a natural talent for it? Well, that’s about to change! I am Yraya, a Children’s Nursing student at King’s College London. As a tutor, my goal is to foster a positive and engaging learning atmosphere, inspiring students to excel academically and instilling in them a love for learning that will help unlock their full potential.

With my unique background growing up in China, Spain, and America, I am fortunate enough to have learned three of the most prevalent languages. This brings cultural competence and language skills to my tutoring that will make connecting with students from diverse backgrounds easy.

Through studying children’s nursing, I developed great communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with children, teenagers, and their parents. In my classes, this will not only maximise their understanding of content, but also aids foster a friendly yet professional relationship. Such a relationship is vital for students to progress at a comfortable pace while ensuring goals are met. Furthermore, my effective communication skills will enable me to provide insightful feedback to both the student and their guardians to ensure optimal efficiency, progress, and satisfaction.

My strict systematic and organised nature guarantees well-structured tutoring sessions aligned with the individual’s learning needs. I create flexible schedules and meticulously designed lesson plans to target specific areas of improvement. Whether it is science subjects, language learning, or overall academic development, I am committed and fully equipped to provide the best possible assistance. Let’s embark on this educational journey and, together, achieve remarkable academic progress that will help set you up for success!

Tutoring Experience

My tutoring journey began in Year 11 and Year 12. As vice president of National English Honor Society, I tutored students ranging from Year 9 to 12 and enrolled in either IB, AP, and regular classes to improve their English reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. This experience taught me the importance of adapting my teaching approach to meet the specific needs of each student and the value of personalised guidance in fostering academic growth.

Additionally, I served as a Spanish tutor, working with students ranging from Year 7 to Year 12. I provided support in vocabulary, sentence structure, and cultural understanding. By incorporating engaging lessons and practical examples, I helped students build confidence and proficiency in Spanish.

I also had the privilege of tutoring my younger family members, aged 4 to 12, in math, English, Spanish, and sciences. Given their differing native languages, this meant tutoring them in both English and Spanish. The age and language differences highlighted to me the importance of creating a nurturing and supportive environment to make the learning experience enjoyable and creating a nurturing and supportive environment that helps them feel comfortable asking questions and exploring concepts at their own pace.

In addition to my formal tutoring roles, I have always been seen as an exemplary student in my classes. Therefore, I continuously lend a helping hand to peers who may be struggling or in need of specific advice with assignments and coursework. As student representative for my Children’s Nursing cohort, this has continued through into university. Overall, my tutoring experiences have equipped me with valuable insights into individualized teaching, nurturing environments, and providing support to students at various academic levels.

Tutoring Approach

Understanding the various methods of learning is crucial, as they can vary depending on the individual and their age. As a tutor, I recognise the importance of comprehending how each student learns best.

Being a visual learner myself, I initially approach tutoring with a visual emphasis (diagrams, drawings, etc.). However, through the use of simple questions and practice exercises, I will evaluate which learning method the student feels they study best in to incorporate into my tuition. Due to the fact one’s learning techniques change, I regularly reevaluate these methods to ensure that the teaching approach remains effective and suitable for the student.

As a tutor, I believe engagement greatly facilitates effective learning; hence, communication and collaboration are vital components of my teaching style. By incorporating fun interactive exercises and age-appropriate academic games, goals, challenges, and/or rewards, I aim to make challenging subjects more fun and enjoyable to learn.

Establishing a connection based on trust, respect, and open dialogue is essential. I encourage students to ask questions and freely express doubts or concerns, so as to create a supportive and comfortable learning environment. This will also facilitate strengths, weaknesses, and unique preferences, goals, or interests/perspectives to be identified for future lesson plans. I strongly believe comprehension and retention is most effective when the student is motivated and interested. Therefore, students’ goals and interests are incorporated into the lessons to ensure all students feel valued and motivated to actively participate in the learning process.
