I am a Geography geek. I love geography and I love teaching geography.
I am currently working full-time as a geography tutor. I do not tutor other subjects; I am not fitting it in around teaching in a school. All my energies and focus are on the geography students I tutor.
I studied geography at Oxford University and then taught Geography - including as Head of Department - at Twyford Church of England High School, one of the best state schools in West London.
I have taught Geography at all ages between year 7 and year 13. I have taught the GCSE course many times and have expertise in teaching A Level geography, in which I have taught both the human and physical sides of the course. I have supported many exceptional students in their applications for university degree courses in Geography bolstered by my deep understanding of the content and requirements of geography degree courses.
I have also worked for both GCSE and A Level exam boards so have a great insight into how to excel at both.
I know the challenges students face in doing well in geography, including: The volume of new and unfamiliar terms to learn, the complex processes and interactions between them, understanding the requirements of different questions, remembering all the case study details, and planning and structuring excellent essays. I have tried and tested techniques to help students with all these challenges.
The lessons are entirely tailored to your needs and what you are working towards. In our first session we will work out together which areas of geography and which skills you want to focus on.
I then put together for your agreement an individual personalised learning plan which will focus on the skills and topic areas we have identified to cover.
Broadly though, in each lesson we start by looking at some interesting, relevant and topical geography from around the world. We use that to prompt thinking about the area of geography under study before finishing with activities to help make that thinking stick in the brain. Depending on what you are working towards that might involve working through some practice questions together.
