Personal Description:

Hi I'm Wilfred! I believe real learning is fun, intriguing and innate to our natural curiosity. This is why I try very hard to make my students discover how each subject is interesting in its own way. I mainly teach Economics up to GCE A-Level and IB Higher Level, and am a BSc. Economics graduate from London School of Economics (2:1). Having achieved 5A*/As in my A-Levels including Mathematics and Psychology, I also help teach these two subjects for GCSEs and AS Level.

Apart from that, I offer advice on being accepted into top UK universities and EU business schools for undergraduate and masters programmes. With my experience of being accepted into LSE, and working with the London Business School admissions team, I help out on applications and school/course choice. Hence, do let me know if you need help on your personal statement, application essays or CV.

Nowadays I am committed to tutoring full-time. I used to work at London Business School, a financial news publisher, and PwC. Being raised in Hong Kong, I have studied and worked in the UK for 7+ years and truly believes in British education.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been tutoring full-time with 25+ international students for GCE A-Level, GCSE and IB. Furthermore, I currently teach exam technique for A-Level Economics at a UK school based in Battersea. On average, I spend around 2 hours preparing and customizing each lesson, so I put an emphasis on understanding the different needs of each student. What I find really rewarding is the camaraderie I share with my tutees, and my success in increasing their confidence and motivation towards the subject.

In terms of school admissions, I have helped students receive offers from top business schools, including London Business School and Cass Business School with a 83% success rate. Of course, my personal experience of receiving 4 out of 5 offers to study Economics at top universities such as LSE and Warwick also helps, in addition to having directly worked with the admissions team at London Business School.

I have always been heavily involved with young adults, as a past student recruiter at London Business School, and as a GCSE mentor at Harris Bermondsey Academy. Nowadays, I am looking forward to volunteering in the Access Project to tutor students in disadvantaged areas, and in being a business advisor for the Young Enterprise Programme in the Ealing area.

Tutoring Approach:

I tailor each lesson to my tutees according to their needs, level of knowledge and personality. In general, I start with going through the fundamental concepts of each subject to ensure a better understanding, even after the material gets complicated. Afterwards, I stimulate the tutee to think and analyse the concepts with their own knowledge, to ingrain it in their memory. Finally, we focus on exam technique and past papers to ensure their ability is properly demonstrated. You can also see my approach for each subject below:

Economics (GCE A-Levels, IB Higher Level, or GCSE)
I teach Economics in an interactive, unconventional and patient way. I use the student's experiences, different economies in the world, and creative examples to bring Economics to life. My approach is very learner-centered and customised to each student, so that they can build interest in Economics for the long run.

In terms of exam technique, quite a few students struggle in longer questions as they do not understand how to evaluate and lack structure in their answers. I can analyse the students answers, train them in evaluation, and offer suggestions on how they can improve. This can range from applying real world examples to following a framework for their answers.

Psychology (AS Level or GCSE)
For Psychology, I focus on experiments and show why those results are interesting in our everyday lives. If possible, it is always fun to carry out a short version of that experiment ourselves! My teacher was very passionate in psychology, and I will never forget I would not have achieved an A* without her excellent teaching.

Mathematics (AS Level or GCSE)
Mathematics can be a difficult and boring subject. However, I do my best to keep the concepts and logic simple and easy to understand. They say Asians are good at math but that is not true without hard work! Of course, I intend to keep the lesson fun with math jokes and share how maths is useful in the long run.

Cantonese/Mandarin (All Ages)
Being raised in Hong Kong, Cantonese is my native language and started learning Mandarin in primary school. I had been tutored Mandarin from a native speaker from Beijing at an early age, and look forward to using the same effective methods to teach others the interesting Chinese language.
–––––––––––
For introductory lessons, I offer a 25% discount to ensure I am a good fit with the tutee. If the teaching location more than 45 minutes away, I only offer online lessons unless each session lasts more than an hour. For online lessons, I generally offer a 20% discount.
