I'm a retired English teacher, and have now been tutoring for three years, with only good feedback so far! My former students have all achieved the grades they needed, and I hope that my present tutees can do the same. My
absolute specialism is A-Level English Literature, for the administration of which I was responsible at Wilmslow High School over many years. We sent many students to Oxbridge - but, perhaps more importantly, we achieved very high grades generally, and enthused almost every student we had.
I have many additional interests, for example in music (guitar/singer/songwriter), in fitness work, and am qualified as an amateur boxing full coach. I also have A-Level Spanish and French, both to grade B, and have taught English in Spain, so I offer those two languages as shown below. I've also taught GCSE History recently, very successfully!
On weekdays I am often available to coach in the daytime, but most of my tutees are late afternoon/early evening clients. I'm currently restricting myself, with new clients, to the South Cheshire area, but for A-level English Literature I do accept a few students farther afield.
I taught English as a classroom teacher, at all levels, for 38 years, specialising in A-Level English Literature but covering all ages and abilities from KS3 upwards.
Having taught English in Spain, and therefore having taken my ability in Spanish beyond A-Level, I am also confident in teaching Spanish at all secondary levels, so long as I feel that the student might benefit from my teaching.
Since I have A-Level French at Grade B, I will also tutor French to GCSE, if I think the student will benefit.
I've also been teaching GCSE History, and have had considerable success, so I'm offering GCSE History from now on.
I'm enthusiastic about my subject, and I work as a private tutor because I wish to succeed on a one-to-one basis in the same way that, as a classroom teacher, I knew collective success with colleagues.
It's vital, in my opinion, that the tutee trusts the tutor: not simply trusting in the tutor's subject expertise, but having confidence also in the tutor's concern for, and assessment of, the student's progress. Simply put, that means that an enjoyable working relationship is an absolute essential.
With school age students, of course, a parent or guardian must also be present on the premises. Fortunately this requirement provides an opportunity, at the end of the lesson, for the parent/guardian to hear. from both tutor and student, how the lesson has gone, and what topics have been covered.
Of course, there are times when a lesson might not go ahead, for example because of adverse weather making travel difficult, but in the event of either party needing to cancel an appointment, I'll always try to add an extra lesson at the earliest possible opportunity, if required by the parent.
So my approach is, I hope, sympathetic, informative and thorough. In short, I enjoy teaching.
