Thomas

Hi, I’m an experienced and well trusted tutor with availability to take on a limited number of new students. I have at least 10,000 hours of one-to-one lesson experience, on top of over a decade of teaching where I have designed and delivered maths and science courses at an independent school. My students seem to find me friendly and approachable – over the years I have built up good long-standing relationships with their parents, with most of my work coming through recommendations.

We moved to Lewes a few years ago, in that time I’ve taken a short break from taking on new students while we settled in and I continued to support my students in London as they finished their qualifications. I'm now looking forward to receiving new enquires...

Please take a look at my experience and the feedback that some of my clients having kindly left. I'm always happy to respond to any enquiry, so just drop me a message if you think I might be useful!

Tutoring Experience

I’ve taught a diverse range of students from all backgrounds, ages and abilities; they have spanned from adult learners looking to get a pass in GCSE maths to prodigies sitting their A levels early. Each case has its own unique set of challenges but I have always enjoyed helping people achieve their goal, whether that's studying at Oxford or getting onto an apprenticeship. My experience in the classroom comes from teaching at an independent school in London, where I taught IGCSE sciences, GCSE maths and IGCSE computer science along with various A levels for well over a decade. I also worked regularly at a top tuition centre, including delivering summer courses for 11+ admissions tests. I have also been vetted and worked regularly through well regarded agency Fleet Tutors, who are very selective with the tutors they use.

I have in-depth knowledge of the science and maths secondary curriculum across all the main exam boards. In terms of A levels, I have most experience in maths/further maths and physics and it is particularly helpful that I have a degree in that field. However, there aren't many things I haven't covered, from international qualifications to BMATs, so just ask if you have a specific requirement and I’ll give an honest answer about my level of experience.

Tutoring Approach

Above all, I believe that I am a patient and empathetic person – I can remember times when I struggled at school, so I try to keep those experiences in mind when teaching. My students have always seemed to find me approachable and are comfortable sharing their concerns about the topics they need help with, which is the key to getting the most out of the sessions. I’m pretty good at gauging understanding, enabling me to explain concepts in a way that students can understand, at a pace they are comfortable with. I do also have quite a bit of experience teaching students that have additional needs such as learning disabilities and anxiety issues - although I don’t have any specific specialism in that.

I am reliable, in that I’ve always been available to my students year-round until the job is done. In fact, I've supported some students through their entire academic journey from year 7 until they went off to university.

I can be flexible with regards to the sessions we arrange; these can take place at your home, online or a mixture of both depending on what you think is best. I'm fairly relaxed about organisation, we can do a regular weekly slot, monthly or as-needed. If you can't do a session or want to change the time, that's fine by me!

(I’m currently thinking about ways I can help out local people that wouldn’t normally be able to afford or even consider private tuition, such as single parents or those who are struggling to make ends meet who perhaps feel their children aren’t getting enough support at school. So please get in touch if you know someone that might be interested in getting some free or reduced tuition or if you know of charities/support groups that work in this area.)
