Hello! My name is Tom, I’m a sixth form and secondary school teacher of History & Politics. I previously had 12 years experience as a university lecturer..
Outside of teaching/lecturing, I have published a book, a chapter of an edited book, three journal articles, four magazine articles (including BBC History and BBC Knowledge magazines), serve as Contents Editor of one of the British Library’s primary source databases, and have been keynote historian for three BBC documentaries.

Tutoring Experience

I am very well-qualified in the subject, as I earned my undergraduate degree in History from the Virginia Military Institute (USA), my MA in History from Virginia Tech (USA), and my PhD in History from Queen Mary University of London. I have lectured at Queen Mary, Royal Holloway, the University of Westminster, the University of the Highlands & Islands and Oxford University. After switching to sixth form and secondary school teaching, I taught in schools in London as well as Dr Challoner’s Grammar School (Amersham, Bucks), and now teach at a top private school in Hampshire.

Tutoring Approach

Not only am I knowledgeable in the subject of History, but am very familiar with the exam strategies required to get top marks on A-Level, GCSE and IGCSE exams for the Edexcel, AQA and OCR exam boards. Owing to my credentials, career to-date, and familiarity with the exam boards I am well-positioned to tutor students from Years 7-13 on any subject of History or Politics. Likewise, owing to my engaging and humorous personality, I am able to make any student develop a huge passion for the subject, which is the most important ingredient in creating a young historian who is prepared to get an A* or 9 on his/her exam. Likewise, I am also aware that every person is an individual who requires a certain approach to learning, which means I will have to make a particular approach to tutoring each student based on his/her needs.
