University College London BA graduate in French and Spanish with a distinction in French.
I started tutoring as an undergraduate and moved to Japan after graduating to work in an international pre-school. This was a fulfilling experience, watching little children start with no English at all to conversing, even telling jokes, in a matter of months!
I tutor for entrance exams, national exams (including the International Baccalaureate, which I took instead of A Levels) and languages for business, leisure and as academic subjects.
As a multilingual, I believe a new language can be picked up regardless of age. The key is a class that involves active participation of the learner and oral repetition.
I also tutor English Literature and Language and have worked with students whose first language is not English, working to ensure quick and noticeable progress and results.
Aside from teaching, I continue to do French-English-Spanish translation work and proof-reading of documents and academic essays.
10+ years experience in 1-to-1/group tuition from primary school level to adult learners:
- Entrance exams
- Secondary level/International Baccalaureate Middle Years: English/ESL, French, Spanish
- GCSE/IGCSE: French, Spanish
- A-Level/International Baccalaureate: French, Spanish
- University entrance Personal Statement
- English as a foreign language
Previous experiences include:
Organiser and instructor of English language training for staff at Hilton Hotel Barcelona
French-English translation of legal documents and online articles for a French law firm
Teacher and private tutor of English as a second language in St Barths, France, Spain and Japan
My tuition approach for school students is to provide the key skills and knowledge needed to succeed in exams and to encourage independent thinking that will take them further in their academic path and beyond.
For learners of a foreign language, I assess the needs of the tutee and then create a personalised program accordingly. I focus particularly on listening and speaking as these skills are traditionally the least practised skills, yet the skills that will enable one to master a foreign language.
For young learners, whether it is preparation for a school entrance exam or a general academic boost, I set fun but relevant activities and games that are age-appropriate to ensure an engaging, stimulating yet educational experience.
