As a qualified and practising teacher, I believe that tutoring is an opportunity to provide personalized instruction that caters to the unique needs and learning style of each student.
My philosophy is centered around creating a supportive and engaging environment that fosters academic growth and builds confidence. I assign homework to reinforce concepts learned during sessions and provide detailed feedback to help students track their progress and identify areas for improvement.
I also believe in maintaining open communication with parents to ensure that we are working together to achieve the student's academic goals. My approach is student-centered, flexible, and tailored to meet the individual needs of each student. I strive to make learning fun, challenging, and rewarding, and I am committed to helping my students reach their full potential.
I am a qualified and working English Teacher presenting all national qualifications. I have also been tutoring for the past 11 years and am able to vary my approach to suit each individual candidate in order to support them as fully as possible. I have also undertaken SQA marking for the Higher English 'paper 2' which has given me a great deal of additional insight.
I have so far found great success with my tutees but this can in no way be guaranteed. You can only get as much out of a tutoring relationship as you put in but my pupils so far have said they find it easier to put in the effort as they see how committed I am to helping them learn. I utilise a wide range of resources that I have honed over the years and I also set the dreaded (and much needed) homework so all new pupils would have to prepared to complete this.
What to expect?
First Sessions:
Our first session will involve quite a lot of questions from me covering every aspect of your study of English so far. This will help me to gauge your level, your strengths and also any areas of challenge.
We will discuss your goals, your engagement and the work that you are prepared to put in and create a plan going forward that will best serve you.
We can then have a quick discussion around suitability and decide together whether we want to move forward.
Further sessions will usually follow a pattern of:
Online Tutoring Considerations:
Online tutoring is discounted because we will not spend the full hour online - we will work together online for 30-40 minutes and I will then set homework based on what we have been working on.
This can then be sent to me any time throughout the week and I will mark it and provide feedback. We would then spend the first few minutes of the next session reviewing this together to clarify feedback etc.
It is best if the pupil has a personal email address, access to their own device and is comfortable using technology.
