Steve

I have always been fascinated by mathematics and science and took a Degree in Mathematics at Warwick University. I have been working in the field of maths education for the last 15 years.

My aim is to make maths learning enjoyable and inspiring for students and to encourage problem solving skills and and understanding of how maths is useful and essential in the everyday world we live in.

My main work is as a Private Tutor and I also write educational resources for Maths learning websites.

Outside of teaching I am also a trained Counsellor and work with private clients. Although I don't use this directly in my tutoring work, the skills I have developed are really useful for understanding why some students struggle in maths.

Tutoring Experience

I have been tutoring now for over 15 years. I started out teaching in an Independent Secondary School in Brighton, teaching the GCSE course, but now I focus on private tuition as I like to be able to give one to one attention to my students. I have had great success with a wide range of students from younger students looking to pass their school entrance exams to GCSE, A level and IB students looking to get into their first choice of university.

Tutoring Approach

My belief is that an inspiring environment for learning is crucial to success. If students receive encouragement and enjoy the learning then they will achieve their highest potential. As a tutor I am able to provide this and to get to know the students way of thinking, what they are interested in and how they can best improve.

A parent wrote recently to say: 'My son's confidence in and enthusiasm for maths has grown immeasurably working with Steve. He is now achieving consistently high marks of A grade standard for achievement and application.'

I use the first meeting with the student to find out their level and their strengths and weaknesses. From there I identify resources to use and a pathway of learning that is best suited to the student. Each student is different and will need different things from me, so it is important that I am flexible and listen carefully to what they say and provide the right balance of encouragement and motivation.

Tuition offers the best chance of success in maths learning alongside good school teaching and my intention is that every student I teach gains confidence and achieves the results that really matter to them.

I am happy to travel to your home to offer tuition, which often is the most comfortable place for students to work. Please note that I may need to ask for additional travel costs if the journey is more than 5 miles from my home.
