I am a fully qualified primary teacher with lots of experience working in schools, and mum of two children, aged 16 and 20 and one little grandchild. I am 56 and a retired teacher.

I offer individually planned 45 minute lessons based on The National Curriculum for 3-8 year olds or for older children who need more help going over the basics in a fun and inspiring way.

My lessons include maths and English, and often art and design and science, depending on what the children enjoy doing the most. I put fun before learning so children feel positive about their education.

The lessons are 25 pounds per 45 minutes (plus a possible small additional cost for travel to you.)

I like meet up with you and your child to discuss their needs after the introduction fee has been paid to First Tutors and before the first lesson. This session is not counted as a lesson, just a getting to know you chat for free. After that, if you are happy, you can pay for lessons in groups of three, in cash, at least a week before. Any missed lessons through illness etc can be changed to a different time.

Lesson times - I can travel to you. After school or weekends.

Also available - some daytime slots for home schooled children.

My maths and English lessons are often planned for older children as follows-

Reading and spelling.
Writing activities.
Maths, core areas eg. addition, subtraction, number bonds, division etc.
Maths, to cover the rest of the curriculum eg. problem solving, shape and space, statistics etc as the weeks go on.
Educational reward activity - eg. buying small items of stationary in a "shop" using real money and giving change, making a present for a parent or carer while also introducing a 3D shape, experimenting with hand writing pens and colours for those who need help with pencil control, experience of fractions and decimals via cutting biscuits or cake.

I can assess your child's progress against The National Curriculum so you know exactly where they are as we go along, although it will take some weeks to get a really good understanding. I have also have lots of experience preparing children for Year 2 SATs.
For younger children the lessons are forty five minutes and won't cover all of the above.
I am happy to do forty five minute educational play based on the nursery curriculum for toddlers.

I often include lots of arts and crafts in my lessons to help children with applied maths, concentration and study skills, often themed, eg. Christmas, Winter, favourite books, walks in the woods, nature, weather, the planets.

I often include science in lessons, which is strongly linked to children's interests and help them to apply maths learning to real life situations, skills needed for future technicians, engineers and in programming, where there is a skills shortage.

I am also a qualified and experienced Careers Advisor and whatever lessons you choose, I will have a sharp eye on your child's future success, just as I do my own children's. My own son has vision impairment and autism so I am able to support children with disabilities or special needs.

I have worked in education, both as a Primary School Teacher, Tutor, Nursery Nurse. I am a friendly and approachable and positive person and aim for the best possible success for the children I have helped, and aim to give the best possible advice to the parents as well.

I am fifty seven years old, retired from teaching to spend more time taking my son out and about, to give him lots of confidence make the most of his vision. I really enjoy social life and travel in my spare time.

Tutoring Experience

I spent two years teaching Year 1 and a year teaching a Year 2 class. I then spent a year and a half as a Nursery Teacher during which I had a very successful Ofsted inspection. Through my years of supply teaching once I had a family, I taught classes up to Year 6 across a variety of schools. I have a very good understanding of the process of learning to read and write and the acquisition of number skills. I have worked with children with various special needs over the years, from ages three to eighteen. I have worked alongside Speech Therapists in the Nursery age group. I have also taught Careers Education in secondary schools, including to those children with extra needs. I was a fully qualified Careers Adviser with the local authority for seven years before I was a teacher. I have helped children who speak other languages to achieve their full potential. I am also qualified to teach English to speakers of other languages, of all ages, through The TEFL Academy.

Tutoring Approach

I am happy to accept pupils with additional needs so long as I feel confident I have the skills to support them.
