Online English and Entrance Exams Teacher

I am a lively, ambitious and practising teacher; I have taught at my Northampton school for 14 years so far. I have an exciting teaching style and a great sense of humour. Working with children is my life and making them better readers, writers and communicators is my ultimate goal. I am absolutely in love with English Literature, and enjoy reading for pleasure daily in addition to listening to audiobooks. I feel that this passion comes across in my teaching of my students in the classroom and I will pass on the same quality of teaching onto you.

In my classroom lessons are always tightly structured to allow the right balance of activities with enough time for feedback and question/answer sessions. You can expect the same from my tutoring sesions and expect your child to have fulfilled objectives set by the end of the lesson while achieving a greater understanding of the skills being taught, and an increased ability to use those skills. I am highly organised and committed to achieving results. Teaching Media and Film Studies too, my results have been consistently among the best (the best on several occasions) in school.

Tutoring Experience

I am proud of the fact that I have been teaching for twenty years. I have worked as a private tutor for over fifteen years part time, working mostly in the evenings. I completed my degree in English Literature at the University of Leicester, completing my PGCE in English and Media immediately afterwards.

I have had several management roles in my career, being Head of KS3 English, Head of Department and Head of Year, ultimately arriving at my current role of Lead Practitioner. This is a varied role which has enabled me to stay in the classroom for the majority of my time. Ultimately, my passion is teaching. I have led the teacher training provision at my current school for nearly a decade.

I began studying for my Masters in Education in September 2006 and graduated in 2008. I have been an examiner for Edexcel, marking KS3 SATS papers for two years. I am currently an examiner and moderator for the WJEC/Eduqas board and have worked as a moderator for A Level English Language coursework with AQA. I taught Spanish employees for a large bank in Milton Keynes English so that they could improve their English speaking and writing skills. I run revision sessions every year for students preparing for their GCSE and A Level exams in both English language (GCSE only) and Literature, Film and Media Studies. I currently teach English, Sociology, Film Studies and Media Studies at all levels up to A Level and have examined for both English, Media Studies and Film Studies at A Level and GCSE. I have vast experience of marking and moderating coursework folders meaning that if students require assistance with coursework I would be happy to provide this support.

For the last 5 years I have deliberately chosen to teach classes with lower literacy levels and SEND needs as I wish to use my experience to improve their literacy.

Tutoring Approach

I have an exciting teaching style and provide clear, structured lessons; each lesson I teach is enjoyable and productive. Lessons are divided up into 3 or 4 parts, following a classic lesson pattern, to ensure that objectives are fulfilled. When coaching students for exams I teach to the specific requirements of the paper to achieve maximum results - the same is true of coursework completion.

For younger students, I provide work that supports their school work and develops their comprehension and writing skills. I focus on key skills that will help build their confidence in their school work and to guarantee future GCSE and A Level success. I firmly believe that continuous practise is fundamental in improving our skills, at every age.

As a father and a Y11 form tutor, you can trust that I will be a competent tutor for your child - please see my feedback record for evidence. Finally, please don't hesitate to make an enquiry, even if you just want some advice - I'm always happy to help.
