My husband and I are both teachers by profession, with a wide range of experience in primary and secondary teaching between us. We live in Leamington Spa with our children and 3 cats.
I trained as a primary teacher, graduating from the University of Warwick with a 2.1 BA (QTS) in English and Curriculum Studies in 2000. During my degree, I worked part-time in primary schools, leading lunch time clubs with ‘Tadpoles School of French’, and also began tutoring primary pupils.
After university, I became a childminder for several years while our children were young. I did begin a part-time teaching post in a Year 4/5mixed class, but we were not happy with the childcare for our three under- fives and my heart wasn’t in it so I continued childminding, along with tutoring pupils in preparing for SATs, GCSE English and French.
When all three had finally started school, I worked for two years in Energy Assessment, but during this time also began working with teenagers through church. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed working with this age group and when a maternity cover post for an English teacher came up I went for it and started work at Blue Coat C of E School, Coventry in January 2009.
Following on from this, I worked as an English teacher at Heart of England School, Solihull for 7 years before moving to Leamington Spa. Having taught Year 7-11 for the majority of my teaching career, this is perhaps my area of real expertise. However, I have tutored both primary and secondary pupils over the last 3years and being married to a primary teacher has given me a very useful link with primary education.
I have also enjoyed teaching a range of adult learners (who do not speak English as their first language) from time to time.
I aim to support pupils in the areas where they lack confidence, as well as stretching them to reach their full potential. I use a mix of tasks during lessons so that they don’t become monotonous, and I ensure that pupil’s have a sense of ownership over their learning. I revisit knowledge deliberately to ensure mastery.
