Sara

Hello and WELCOME to my profile, I’m Sara! I am an Italian PhD student at Imperial College happy to provide support for students studying biology and science at many levels. I’m available evenings and weekends! I completed a BSc in Cellular and Molecular Biology (2011) and an MSc in Functional Genomics (2013) graduating with a first class honours degree (University of Trieste). I received the Ziller’s prize for the best student of Science 2013 and the Gold Award and admission to the world international genetically engineered machines (iGEM) at the MIT – Boston, 2012. Following this, I worked for a year as a research fellow with Prof Legname - a collaborator of the Nobel Prize Prof SB Prusiner. Then, I graduated from Imperial College in Biomedical Research (MRes, Distinction, 2015). I’m currently starting my third year of PhD in Cardiovascular Science (BHF fellow) at the National Heart and Lung Institute.

I am a passionate and enthusiastic biologist, mainly expert in cell and molecular biology, cardiovascular disease and macrophage function.

I have several interests including running, climbing, photography and travelling.

Tutoring Experience

I have an extensive range of tutoring and teaching experience. I started volunteering as a tutor at high school to support the youngest students in my school, helping them with their homework in Italian, Math, Science, Ancient Greek and Latin. Then, since university, I have been tutoring biology and science (GCSE and A level). Recently, I also taught science (focusing on the heart) in two classes at the Holy Family Catholic Primary School. Currently, I am a practical demonstrator for Biomedical undergraduate students at Imperial College. Through my passion and enthusiasm for biology, I can deliver complex concepts and help the students to identify the key points.

Tutoring Approach

I believe that each student is different. So, I use the first meeting to define together the goals that the student wants to achieve. Based on the level, the time available and the frequency of the tutoring I will design a plan of studying. Usually, I recommend at least 1 hour of tutoring per week. The first 10 minutes are used to review the concepts of the previous meeting, answer to specific questions and eventually provide help with school homework. Then, we will focus on one or two main topics. Together with the student, we will identify the key concepts to build a solid background. At the end of each tutoring, I will provide a test to prepare examinations.

I will also provide to the student a schematic summery as a reminder of the lesson as well as share with him/her tips and advice acquired during my scientific career.

I am looking forward to meeting you!
