Ruth

I am an experienced teacher and tutor who is looking to expand my private tutoring work to fit in with family life. I love teaching and take great joy in helping students to achieve their potential. I am very patient and very conscientious, which can be clearly shown by the meticulous lesson planning and feedback, to parents as well as the production of well thought out lessons with high quality resources. I am very flexible and adaptable, to the needs of individual students, as I have experience in an SEN department working to improve literacy with children who have issues with school refusal, emotional, behavioural or educational needs which hold them back. Yet, I also have a long history of preparing students for GCSE and ALevel examinations with the aim of achieving very highly. I'm also very approachable and students have no trouble in opening up and being honest about their work and their progress.

Tutoring Experience

I have 20 years experience in the classroom as a teacher mainly of Geography but also English. I have worked as a private tutor in both Geography and English including GCSE and ALevel in both subjects for that time also. I have recently been working in a mainstream secondary SEN department with small groups to improve literacy where students were underperforming. I have also prepared students in Geography for 13+ and entrance to both Harrow and Eton public schools. I have experience of teaching IGCSE Geography both in person and online.

Tutoring Approach

My approach is to carefully listen to the requirements of the student - both from the student themselves as well as their parents. I plan lessons with the main teaching objectives and learning outcomes. I produce my own resources including powerpoints and worksheets, aiming to make the work as accessible and interactive as possible. If students enjoy the activities, they are more likely to remember what we have done. I give regular oral and written feedback to parents about how students are progressing against my learning objectives and give them targets while keep them informed of what is coming next.
