Since 1995, I have been teaching mathematics. I currently teach at Canterbury Steiner School as well as Canterbury FE College. In each of my classes the students are encouraged to develop their mathematical skills through group activities, independent problem-solving and computer based learning. I believe that Mathematics is a vibrant subject that is very relevant to the world around us. It incorporates a number of practical applications that can be used in many different vocations (e.g. Business, Physics, IT, Psychology, Engineering, Medicine and many others). There is also a wonderful, creative aspect to it; encouraging students to tackle challenging problems by using very skilled and thoughtful methods. I have always promoted the idea that a classroom is a place for collective learning for both students and teachers alike.
I have been teaching mathematics at schools and colleges (KS 3, 4, 5) for over twenty years. I have a wealth of experience teaching Mathematics GCSE and A level (incl. further maths). I also have several years experience tutoring primary school children in preparation for the 11+/Kent test.
To ensure my teaching meets the individual learning needs of each student my lessons are well planned with clear aims and objectives. My lessons are part of a well structured scheme of work. I currently deliver the Edexcel Mathematics GCSE and A-level courses. I consider it an integral part of the course that the students develop their exam techniques during the course. It is vital that they learn to achieve the kind of solutions required to attain the highest grades. Student work is consistently and appropriately set and assessed to help progress, stretch and challenge their learning. For Primary school children I work with them to prepare for the Kent test by taking them through practice tests and then focusing on areas which require improvement such as arithmetic, vocabulary, reading and comprehension. I also discuss with the parents how they can work with their children at home to help their child develop in their learning.
