I have been fortunate to have been able to focus on the teaching of the most important and fundamental science to determined or able students (not necessarily the same!) for almost all of my teaching career.
I am now able to offer individual tuition in school Physics to any students who wish to improve their understanding of the subject and, ultimately, their performance in examinations. As well as lessons in GCSE and A level Physics I provide support in the mathematics needed for A level Sciences and can help students to develop practical skills in preparation for assessment of "required practicals" or the new practical skills endorsement - particularly important for home-schooled students or those who have missed time in school for whatever reason.
I taught Physics in school from 1988 to 2015 with the last 15 years as Head of Physics. In addition to GCSE and A level teaching I have taught extra lessons developing the mathematical skills needed for success and provided individual support for university entrance including Oxford PAT.
Since 2015 I have been offering private tuition but I also taught GCSE and A level Physics three days a week in a local community college for a year, having initially supported them during the absence of a key member of their staff. I helped with the teaching of Physics at Exeter Mathematics School; provided support as an Ogden Isaac Fellow with Isaac Physics courses for Years 10 and 12 and supported non-specialist Physics teachers as part of the Stimulating Physics initiative. I have just completed a year back at Exeter Maths School teaching A-level Physics part-time and providing subject support for Year 12 and Year 13 students. I am a part-time Associate Lecturer with the University of Lincoln teaching some of the DipHE in Marine Studies, based at Dartmouth.
I have recently been a team leader for the marking of domestic A levels, have marked both GCSE and A level papers and I mark practical exams for International A level and O level.
Following the government's "stay at home" advice as their response to the COVID-19 pandemic I began teaching on-line using the Zoom platform and have found this to work well and is preferable to me travelling to students. I also offer lessons at my home (with cleaning and social-distancing protocols in place appropriate to current guidelines).
Special lessons can be offered for A level students planning to study Physics or Engineering at university or GCSE students looking to take Physics A level next year.
Physics is about understanding how our Universe works, from the smallest sub-atomic particles to the interactions between the largest galaxies. Study of Physics can be a challenge and success requires resilience in an atmosphere where failure is accepted as a step towards understanding. I know that even the brightest students need help to link together new concepts and to practice use of key problem-solving skills. In lessons we build on what the student already knows and can do rather than to present them with the answer to a question.
