I have a first class honours degree in mathematics from Goldsmith's College London where I won the Stanley Hails Prize. (1997). For 8 years I worked in a state school teaching GCSE, A level, AEA and STEP. My students experience a noticeable boost in confidence after they start with me and I get about half my students on recommendation. I enjoy helping people to find interest in this subject whether at GCSE level or Cambridge entrance.
I started teaching mathematics for Thomas Jackson Tutors in Lampeter in 1987. I have given private tuition in mathematics since 1988, and I taught mathematics from GCSE to A level Further Mathematics AEA and STEP at an academy in Essex from 2009 to 2017.
I have just received an email from a student who did A level Statistics with me online this year. He said: "S2 … was one of my best exams, I got a high A up from a C last year. Thank you very much for all your help, I don't think I'd be going to the Uni I wanted without you!" Another A level student got an A star this year, he was not going to college and only had me. I do not cover Decision Mathematics at A level.
I teach in person or online via Skype. All lessons are one to one. I do in the lessons what my students ask me to do since the issues usually arise from what they are doing at school or college. I can also structure courses for people who are not in school. Students sometimes make rapid progress in the first few lessons because they do not feel inhibited from asking questions in the one to one context, which they do not feel like asking in a group. One thing which I emphasise is that students should practice a particular type of question until they are used to them as opposed to just being able to get their chin up over the bar. I learned the importance of this when I was myself a student. I do not merely show students how to do particular questions but I teach them how to think about the subject and their progress quickens because of this deep and necessary understanding. I do not cover Decision or Discrete Mathematics at A level. These subjects are not helpful in getting into a top university, are often regarded as not very useful by students, and concern problems which should really be solved by writing computer programs. I will always answer queries between lessons by email.
