I am a well read, innovative teacher who loves to impart my experience and knowledge to the younger generation. I particularly want to help those who have confidence issues or gaps in their education and who want to be built up. I have lived in Honiton with my wife (also a teacher) and 2 boys for the last 10 years. An experienced teacher of many years, I have recently reduced my school teaching commitment to take on more private tuition, as well as to engage in more community-related work in the Honiton area and to pursue my music and writing aspirations.
I have taught in a wide range of schools, both primary and secondary, over the last 35 years. My specialities are Maths and Science (my Cambridge degree is in Naturals Sciences). Until 2022, I was teaching at a local Prep school where I was Deputy Headteacher and Head of Maths, Science & Music! Now I am free to engage in one-to-one tutoring at any time in the week.
I like to go through the fundamentals of my subject(s) with the student first, noting any weak areas. These then become the focus for further teaching, together with practice of a range of problem-solving and other types of questions. I like to make sessions as enjoyable and interactive as possible, using all my creativity to find different and accessible ways to get concepts across. I consider myself to be quick to identify - and then fill in - the missing pieces in the jigsaw of children's understanding. I have a good track record with current and past students, with parents appreciating my friendly, enthusiastic and positive manner.
