Rebekah

Rebekah grew up in Switzerland and so has been exposed to multilingualism from an early age; as a child, she spoke English at home, French at school, and started learning German at the age of seven. She is passionate about languages and convinced anyone can pick them up—with just a little time and commitment!

Rebekah went on to study French and German at Southampton University where she achieved a First. After completing a postgraduate certificate in translation, she took up teaching at Horris Hill Preparatory School where she became Head of Modern Languages. Whilst working at Horris, she also completed a postgraduate certificate in education. Through her practice in the classroom and as a tutor, Rebekah has helped many pupils successfully pass their entrance exams for their chosen senior school.

She has had experience of teaching a range of ages and people from differing backgrounds: ex-pats and employees at Nestlé in Vevey, Switzerland; university students; sixth-formers and children.

Tutoring Experience

-I set up Thomas Tuition in September 2018 and have been providing tutoring services since. I have tutored a wide range of clients, from pre-schoolers to adults.

-I taught French, German and Spanish at Horris Hill Preparatory School (September 2015–June 2018). I taught Common Entrance and Scholarship candidates (years 7 and 8). Most of my pupils were preparing to sit papers at Eton, Winchester, Radley and Harrow.

-I completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education for Independent Schools (PGCE) at the University of Buckingham (September 2017–June 2018).

-I worked for the British Council in Hamburg, in Germany, teaching English in a college for sixth formers and adult learners (August 2012–May 2013). I was responsible for preparing and delivering lessons for twelve different classes a week. I was also involved in organising extra-curricular activities, such as trips to the theatre and longer visits to cities renowned for their culture, literature, and history.

-I undertook a five-month teaching placement at a comprehensive secondary school in Southampton (January–May 2012). I was assisting with French and German lessons and was also responsible for organising cooking clubs which were culture specific. My aim was to motivate young linguists in their studies by relating their lessons to real life situations.

-I taught conversational French to a community of English-speaking ex-patriots in Switzerland (October 2009–January 2010). My pupils included adults and children with ranging abilities, which necessitated individual lesson plans.

Tutoring Approach

My approach is tailor-made; I am happy to help with homework, focus on sticking issues, or plan something completely new. I am keen to make language learning authentic and to outline clear, achievable goals. Structure of the sessions and key objectives can be discussed at the outset. I am happy to cover all key skills, as required by the client (speaking, writing, listening, reading, grammar, literature, culture, etc.).
