I have many years of teaching experience, both as a Head of Music, and more recently a specialist in A level. I have also taught piano for 20 years to degree students and I specialise in teaching adults. I am part way through a PhD in composition and film and I'm expert in Sibelius and very confident with Logic Pro and Final Cut. I am currently studying all the Adobe products. I can assist Music Students in a wide number of ways, be it with Composition, Analysis, Harmony, (I have written my own course), Aural Skills, Teaching Piano, learning more about Piano Technique, Interpretation and Style, or anything associated with computer software related to my areas of expertise.
Private Piano Teacher for 40 years plus.
Head of Music at a Large comprehensive School and additional classroom experience as a specialist A Level Teacher
Piano Teacher to Degree Students at the University of Liverpool for 20 years
A Mentor for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music ABRSM for 14 years.
I love teaching on a one to one basis, although I also enjoy the interaction with small groups. Because of my wide knowledge base I can assist students with problems and help them to overcome them and move forward in a short space of time. This is particularly useful in a subject like Composition, where so many school teachers don't have the knowledge base to really help their students understand how to develop something they have written after the first few bars, or what really constitutes a good Composition. Many students choosing Music for University haven't done Harmony and i can put them through an accelerated course. I can assist anyone wishing to develop their piano performing skills, no matter what the level. I specialise in showing pupils the correct technique to help them overcome problems and open doors to progress.I have found that very few piano students have ever been taught any piano technique and if they don't have natural hands they believe that they can't progress further. It is also important that piano teachers are more aware of how they can help their students.
