Maths and English Lessons in Sidcup

After graduating from Edinburgh University with an M.A Joint Hons in French and German I taught Modern Languages for ten years in a Bexley secondary school. For seven years (from 2010 to 2017), I taught part-time in a local primary school, tutoring one-to-one and small groups in Maths and English. My children have both been through local grammar schools and so I am well aware, both as a teacher and a parent of the demands of the current education system. I have tutored for the 11 plus and am familiar with its requirements. For the last twelve years I have participated in an advanced German course in order to maintain a high level of fluency in this language and am also participating in an advanced French conversation class. I am also a keen tennis player.

Tutoring Experience

As already mentioned, after achieving qualified teacher status, I taught French and German at a local Bexley school for ten years. I subsequently tutored children with medical needs in Bexley for two years which involved teaching a variety of subjects such as French, English literature and Maths. In 2010 I was accepted as a Bexley tutor on the 'Making good progress' one-to-one tutoring scheme for Literacy in both a Bexley secondary and primary school. I was retained at the primary school for seven years to teach Maths and English in both small groups and one-to-one for years 5 and 6, keeping me up to date with current teaching. I have been a private tutor for several years now.

Tutoring Approach

I feel that one of my strengths as a tutor is that I am able to pitch material to my pupils' interests and strengths in order to make learning positive and enjoyable for them. As I have two daughters who have been through the Grammar system and ahave been to University so I am well able to empathise with the stress on both parents and children as they encounter the rigours of the 'National Curriculum', 11+, GCSEs, A levels and University......
