Home Tuition for History and Sociology in Exeter

I have attended a number of universities including Exeter and Cambridge. I have a first class degree, a scholarship from Cambridge University, a PhD, and a Teaching Qualification (PGCE) so I have had a successful education.
Education has been important to me so i am conscientious and care about good quality education and learning. I think that good quality tutoring that can improve your results will help you as a person and will help you to succeed. The subjects I can teach include: history; cultural studies; media studies; art history; visual culture; cultural geography; sociology; critical thinking; middle east studies; international relations; museum studies; design history; art methodologies and reflexive practice.

Tutoring Experience

I have been a full-time teacher in Higher Education for 12 years, and I have specialised in helping undergraduates (up to 150 per year), including foreign students, to formulate essays and theses to a high standard. For example I have helped students to gain top marks for essays, and firsts for thesis, and I have marked thousands of student essays at a range of levels. I have an excellent understanding of how to write effective essays and how to improve results. I specialise in study skills and in helping students through the entire process of essay writing.
I have taught across a number of subjects including art history: art, craft and design history; cultural history (including non-european); sociology and history. I have interviewed and helped many students at KS5 who are applying to university. Finally I have designed courses for the Open University so I understand the importance of assessment and marking processes. I am therefore an experienced and well-informed tutor particularly about writing and marking essays.

Tutoring Approach

I appreciate that writing essays, disserations, Masters, or Phds is hard work and difficult. It is often stressful too. I will try to understand with you what aspects of essay writing you need to learn about. I can help you to: edit your essay; explain assessment criteria; build an effective structure in response to a particular question; build content and style; raise the level of discussion and communicate this effectively in order to gain marks. Overall I can improve your academic potential by giving you effective feedback with clear goals and tasks. I will ensure you understand what makes for a good quality essay and I will spend the time to explain this in relation to your project and in relation to your specific strengths and weaknesses. That is my job! And if you struggle with motivation and anxiety, or just getting started, I can also offer specific support. Basically I have plenty of experience to help you in essay writing.
