This is how 2 referees rated Paul:
I am a very hard working and conscientious professional who always strives to meet the learners needs and encourage them to achieve their potential in everything they do. I have exceptional communication skills and develop an excellent rapport with my students. I will do everything in the best interests of the students, motivate them to work hard and provide them with opportunities to succeed and achieve their goals.
I have vast experience teaching geography at all levels for the past 7 years. Throughout that time I have taught SQA qualifications at every level and this is my 4th year teaching the new national and higher qualifications, which have been implemented throughout North Lanarkshire for the past 4 years. Additionally, I have been at the forefront in my department in developing resources to support the learners needs and ensuring all students are meeting the standards required to pass all the outcomes for each level. I also work for the SQA as one of the 20 team leaders in Scotland marking the higher question paper and higher assignment. I have three years experience marking the exam papers and assignments for both the national 5 and the new CfE higher courses, 1 of which has been as a team leader for the higher question paper and higher assignment.
I have 4 years experience as a tutor and during that time all candidates I have tutored have gained an A or B at higher level. In each SQA level class I have taught over the past 5 years over 80% of pupils have achieved an A or B.
My approach is to work one-on-one with students to build upon their knowledge and enhance their understanding of the content in the geography curriculum. I provide resources and study aids, which helps to improve this aspect of their learning. Additionally, I work with the student to improve their exam technique, which is essential for achieving a top grade at all levels. In doing so, I will teach the student how to write exemplar answers, work on timing and mark their work, which I will then provide detailed feedback on the areas which require improvement.
Furthermore, I will work with each student on their added value units or assignments to show them how it should be structured, the detail they must add to gain full marks and practice completing these assignments in the allocated time. Once again, I will mark each piece of work and provide detailed feedback in order for them to produce an assignment that meets the requirements set out by the SQA markers.
