Hello . I am a full time English and Drama teacher (Head of Department, Edexcel, AQA - moderator and examiner ) living in County Durham. I work full time in an Academy that has a very good reputation for success. I have worked as a teacher for over 20 years, an examiner for over 14 years. Prior to my teaching employment I worked as part of a creative writing team for one of the biggest advertising companies in the UK. I also ran and managed a chain of Theatre schools.

I enjoy working as a tutor and am able to travel week nights and weekends. Although recently online tutoring has become very popular and I have found this is a preference for many.

Along with teaching I upload weekly on my YouTube educational channel.

I like to start all English work with a short reading and writing test (especially with KS2 and KS3 pupils). This enables me to evaluate strengths and weaknesses. I create personalised plans for your sessions. All sessions are aimed to be enjoyable and challenging.

I have lectured in Theatre for BA degree courses at several higher education establishments including Drama schools and have recently worked with young adults preparing audition pieces for Drama schools and GCSE component 1 and 2 performances.

Tutoring Experience

I graduated from Manchester University in 1999. I then furthered my studies, trained as a teacher, at Durham University (PGCE). I am currently employed as Subject Leader - English and Drama.I find myself having to be very flexible and have a very good grasp of all the major examination syllabuses for both GCSE English Language and Literature ( Edexcel WJEC, AQA, IGCSE, AQE-Northern Ireland).

My formulas for GCSE English range from 'getting over the line grade 4/5/6 to aiming high grade 7/8/9. I believe everyone can learn my formulas and gain targets.

KS2 English teaching covers comprehension and SPAG for SATs and entrance exams, including AQE for northern Ireland pupils.

I am also currently working as an examiner and moderator for GCSE Edexcel and AQA (English and Drama). As all employed teachers I have QTS, a full CRB check and always carry my photo ID and DBS disclosure Reference when working.

Over the past years I have also tutored many pupils including pupils oversea preparing for entrance exams from 11plus to 6th form. I have a 100% success rate, including some of the more competitive private schools in the UK and international schools. My formulas and structure are well planned and developed from years of experience as a teacher and examiner. My client base has stretched from China, Russia, America, Dubai to most regions in the UK.

I also have tutored pupils that are following home school curriculum.

Tutoring Approach

I believe tutoring 1-1 enables students to have precise focus on any issues. A good tutor can raise achievement in a well-structured manner to reach and exceed targeted grades. Planning and preparation is a key to success from both student and tutor. I think it advisable to have ( if school allow and if possible) school exercise books at hand. I will be able to see what part of the curriculum has been covered and where help is needed.

I have recently taught several pupils, through Skype, Teams and online tutoring. This is an option for you and I find it very beneficial, especially if distance is an issue!
