Personal Description:

NB: I am currently taking students for support throughout this academic year. My availability is limited so please contact sooner to ensure a place!

An experienced high standard tutor, I am a Biomechanical Engineering PhD candidate at Imperial College. I hold a 1st MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering and was awarded the Bob Hall prize for Innovation and the Higher Achieving Student award by Nottingham University. My final year project was accepted for presentation at the International Society of Biomechanics 2015 conference.

In my spare time, I am Editor in Chief for an online student science publication.

I offer summer sessions and year long support to help people achieve their potential in the Sciences and Entrance Exams, including the GRE.

Tutoring Experience:

I have 5 years of teaching experience in Mathematics and the Sciences. As part of my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver, and Gold awards I volunteered for three years at my local youth center where I coached children through school work.

This prepared me for the role of prefect at my secondary school, King Edward VI Grammar, Stratford upon Avon.I mentored students of all ages in their studies and school life.

Since then, I have tutored children and adults of all abilities to prepare for exams ranging from Functional Skills to Further Maths across a range of exam bodies (AQA, Edexcel, OCR). As a Graduate Teaching Assistant, I have received training in tuition for students up to undergraduate level and I am working towards accreditation.

Outside of academia, I trained incoming employees in the use of computational fluid dynamics software at an international automotive company and coached existing employees in the implementation of Lean Manufacture principles at a utility company.

Tutoring Approach:

Understanding is crucial to success, especially in academia. I try to ensure that the basic and key concepts are understood instead of teaching a process. Through this, a student is able to adapt the knowledge and handle any problem they may encounter. This is especially true in the subjects of Maths and Physics, where the basic concepts never change and they are the building blocks for more complex problems. Combining this with guidance in exam technique helps ensure the student achieves the best marks.

I endeavour to understand how people learn and tailor my lessons to match so that the student digests the topic as efficiently as possible. Relativity is a crucial part of understanding, and I work to ensure that my lessons are framed in terms familiar to the student. This also aids recollection and communication of information, both integral to exam success.

Lastly, I strive to make lessons fun! I firmly believe that learning shouldn't be painful, and we do our best when we are enjoying ourselves. A fun environment facilitates confidence in students, enabling them to attempt problems without fear of failure. It helps hold attention and encourage engagement, ensuring students get the most out of each lesson. Finally, it promotes creativity and problem solving, skills that are imperative to success within and without academia.
