I'm a kind and hardworking private tutor (for both pupils and adults/casual learners) who gets on well with children and teenagers. As well as teaching, I regularly contribute to a German newspaper and write screenplays. I also edit, proofread and translate German-English. Most of all I am good at connecting with people and understanding their specific needs, and helping them to build their confidence. Every pupil I've ever taught has unique and amazing abilities, which we build on together.
I am half German, half British. I grew up in London and Cambridge, and moved to Leipzig, Germany, for several years after finishing my A-levels. I did my undergraduate degree in Social Anthropology there, in both German and English (both of which are my native languages), and also started working as a freelance tutor, editor and translator. I have an MA (distinction) in Cultural Studies from Goldsmiths College.
My first, very rewarding teaching experience was in 2019 as a private home-school teacher in Mexico. I then joined a German government tutoring program for children hit particularly hard by the pandemic. I taught a range of subjects (History, Geography, Maths, English, German) to a range of pupils.
I now tutor KS2 to A-level and teach languages online and in-person in London from ages 4 to 40. I am currently teaching English Language, English Literature, History and Spanish GCSE in 1-on-1 homeschool/school replacement (where school is no longer an option for those children) settings. I also teach medium groups in schools as a supplementary part of their education. I am DBS checked, fully vetted and qualified to work in school settings, and illness and disability aware.
My biggest successes have always been in inspiring the student's interest in the subject. I've had students go from 'I hate English' to 'I've never learnt to much in my life!' and 'Virginia Woolf is an incredible writer'. One of my GCSE German pupils went from working at a 4 to achieving a 9 (highest grade available) in their final exams. I always meet the student where they're at and encourage them to do as much has they can for themselves.
As someone who's studied Humanities, Social Sciences and Film, I really care about people finding their passions and providing gateways to enjoying learning. Learning is far more sustainable and enriching if it is enjoyed! I like to let the pupil lead by their interest and use that interest to inspire for the subject matter at hand. That being said, I am also happy to go through syllabus in a no-frills way if that's desired.
PRICING FLEXIBLE - if (and only if) you are low-waged/unwaged or on benefits we can find a price that works for both sides.
