Nikolaos

Hello! My name is Nikos, I am 23 years old and I come from the greatest holiday destination, Greece.

I studied Mathematics for 4 years at the University of Patras where I graduated as a Valedictorian. It is there that I was inspired to pursue an academic career and motivate other students as my professors did to me. After that, I came to London to study Statistics at the Imperial College of London where I also graduated with distinction.

During my undergraduate years, I was a teacher for underprivileged students in my hometown for 3 years as well as the director of the school I was volunteering at.

I was a teacher preparing students for the International Mathematics Olympiad in Patras. I helped translate documents for visually impaired students at the University of Patras.

These experiences are the ones that have shaped me into who I am today. They made me a more mature person, especially the teaching part, and have also helped me understand the meaning of sharing.

Finally, I am currently at a Centre for Doctoral Training at Lancaster University where I am doing a PhD in the field of Statistics.

Tutoring Experience

When I turned 18 years old I became a teacher for 13-17 year-old underprivileged students. I taught them Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics. Additionally, I helped 10 students by teaching Mathematics so as to prepare for the Greek national exams which eventually led them to succeed and earn their places at Universities in Greece.

Furthermore, I helped with their preparation for the International Mathematics Olympiad a class of 10 students.

Throughout my undergraduate years, I helped many friends pass certain modules, including Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, Probability Theory and Programming Languages.

Finally, I have been a tutor for undergraduate students in the UK for the past two years. I have tutored 7 students, in various university-level modules.

For these reasons, I can confidently say that I have a broad range of knowledge and I can help students of any level understand the topic they are studying and provide a deeper understanding of what it takes to be a Mathematician.

Tutoring Approach

My teaching approach is more Student-Centered. When it comes to Mathematics I am a firm believer that you need repetition to fully understand the concepts. Of course, I would always provide the relevant theory, but I would continue by seeing where the student is struggling and adapt my teaching to her/his specific needs by identifying the source of confusion and give intuitive explanations.

I always encourage students to ask questions so that I can fully understand and address misunderstandings. This in turn gives my students more confidence as they start to grasp the concepts more firmly.

My ultimate goal is to make my students "graduate" from our lessons. For this to happen they need to think like Mathematicians. This requires a certain set of skills, which I have broken down into steps, and together with the student, we try to reach that point.
