I'm Neil Hedge, a recently qualified teacher with a Mathematics degree from the University of Hull and a PGCE from the University of Manchester. I bring a fresh, energetic approach to teaching, supported by practical classroom experience and years of private tutoring. My academic background and strong communication skills allow me to make complex concepts accessible and engaging, particularly in Maths and Reasoning. I'm passionate about helping students build confidence, independence, and a genuine enjoyment of learning. Whether it’s supporting students aiming for top marks in their GCSEs or preparing younger learners for 11+ exams and selective school entry, I pride myself on delivering focused, tailored sessions that make a real difference. Outside of exam prep, I also support general enrichment—helping learners go beyond the curriculum to think creatively and critically. My mission is to unlock potential in every student, and help them believe in what they’re capable of.
As a fully trained teacher with a PGCE from the University of Manchester, I’ve taught and tutored students from Key Stage 2 through to Key Stage 4, specialising in Maths, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. My teaching placements and tutoring roles have given me a strong foundation in both one-to-one and classroom instruction, especially at the crucial 11+ and GCSE stages. Over the past few years, I’ve worked with pupils preparing for grammar school entry, independent school scholarships, and GCSE exams—often supporting them to move from uncertainty to top grades. I’ve also delivered enrichment and extension sessions to high-achieving students who need challenge beyond the standard curriculum. I’ve worked online and in-person, and I’m experienced at adapting my teaching style to suit learners of different abilities, including those with mild SEN needs. My focus is always on measurable progress, confidence-building, and long-term academic growth.
My approach is structured, supportive, and always tailored to the individual. I begin by identifying a student’s strengths, gaps, and goals—then build a plan that combines clear explanation with purposeful practice. For 11+ students, I focus on building core reasoning skills and exam technique through engaging activities and timed tasks. For GCSE students, I target curriculum knowledge, problem-solving strategies, and grade-boosting exam skills. I adapt my pace and materials to suit each learner, ensuring sessions are challenging but never overwhelming. I use regular low-stakes quizzes, guided feedback, and positive reinforcement to build confidence and momentum. As someone trained in modern teaching methods, I bring energy and clarity to every session, whether in-person or online. I also offer stretch activities and creative thinking tasks for enrichment, helping students become not just exam-ready but curious, capable learners. Above all, I aim to make every session focused, motivating, and enjoyable.
