Maths and Physics Lessons in Barnes

Hi! I'm Naveen, a mechanical engineering student at Imperial College London who is currently working on a placement at a medical devices company in South London. My interest lies in medical technology, as I'm keen to apply my engineering skills to make a positive impact on people's lives. Thanks to my university course, I have gained extensive knowledge of maths and science that will assist me in teaching the fundamentals of these topics as well as pushing students to improve their abilities in these subjects.

Alongside my studies, I'm an avid sports enthusiast, with a particular interest in cricket and football which I play for the university teams. This year, I have also served as the football club's president which I think will help me as a tutor as this year I have been able to offer guidance and help some of the new students to get their best start to university life.

Tutoring Experience

My experience in tutoring comes primarily from my time as a part of a buddying scheme at my school, where I provided one-on-one sessions to GCSE students while I was studying for my A-levels. During these sessions, I discovered the importance of adapting teaching styles to fit the individual needs of each student, which allowed me to create personalised and engaging lessons in the limited time available. As a result, I was able to create a positive learning environment that students were keen to attend voluntarily.

In addition to my tutoring experience at school, I have also collaborated with my peers at university during revision periods, where we worked together to produce our own learning resources. These resources included summaries and quizzes, which I believe could be useful additions to any tutoring session. By providing such resources, lessons can be better structured, and students can keep track of what they have learned, which helps them focus and organize their self-study. Overall, my tutoring experience has taught me the importance of adapting to the individual needs of each student while also providing structured and engaging lessons that encourage active participation and self-motivation.

Tutoring Approach

As a tutor, I understand that every student has a unique learning style, and it's important to recognize and adapt to it. Some students may benefit from practical experiences, while others may prefer visual aids or reading and writing activities. Therefore, I believe that the best approach to tutoring is to incorporate a variety of teaching methods that cater to each student's individual learning style.

During my placement, I have gained an appreciation for the value of learning content in a way that allows students to apply it in real-world situations. This begins with developing a deep understanding of the basics before building on it to understand more complex concepts that can be applied to novel problem-solving situations. However, I also recognize the importance of exam preparation and aim to balance lessons to enhance understanding while also focusing on exam technique.

To make lessons more engaging, I use a student-centered approach to teaching. By asking students questions and encouraging them to ask me questions, we can engage in discussions that help them better understand the material. I find that incorporating real-life examples and interactive activities makes learning more enjoyable and less intimidating. By creating a fun and engaging learning environment, I strive to help students develop a love for learning that will stay with them beyond their tutoring sessions.
