I am a science graduate and qualified teacher but my early career was in industry, initially as a scientific instructor then subsequently managing large companies involved in chemicals and aerospace engineering; so I bring a wider perspective to tutoring than someone whose experience is limited to the educational sector.
Maths and science are personal interests as well as professional teaching skills for me. Having now retired from full time working I have lots of time available and want to help others by sharing my passion and skills in mathematics and science.
My real-world experience of using maths and science in business helps students understand and relate to the subjects as something more than just academic requirements.
I have tutored and coached a wide range of pupils. My students range across schools in both the state and independent sectors. During my career I have designed and produced many teaching manuals and have published original educational research into programmed learning. I have a detailed and up to date knowledge of the exam specifications for all the main UK exam boards in the state sector and the IGCSE favoured by independent schools. I also tutored my own children, both of whom went on to obtain good university degrees.
I adapt my approach to the individual student depending upon their particular needs. My objective is always to develop their core skills and understanding so they can acquire effective problem solving strategies and exam techniques.
We will look at material I have prepared and also look at relevant questions and examples students themselves wish to raise, so they should be ready to raise topics they find challenging.
When approaching exams we will focus on the content and question styles which are typical of the relevant exam board.
Anyone can learn maths and science with the right support. Having the confidence to learn the skills is the key to opening up a world of possibilities.
I am happy to tutor children or adult learners and am particularly keen to support students studying towards chemistry A-level or maths GCSE.
