My approach to teaching is based on being flexible. I have found that no two pupils are exactly the same, so I have a range of strategies that aim to meet each persons needs to the best of my ability. I have found that being patient is always helpful. I regularly check that the pupil is understanding and I encourage them to be very honest when they feel confused. I am happy to repeat things and to try different ways of explaining. Some people like me to take the lead and to watch me solving problems, others prefer to do the opposite, ie they take charge and I concentrate hard to check everything they say and do. When they get stuck I intervene. Sometimes we discover that although they are understanding the topic we are studying there is an unexpected weakness in an area from the past. Being flexible can mean moving to that area for a while, before returning to the problem at hand. People sometimes say that they can understand when I show them, but that there is too much to remember and they would not be able to do it alone. Here, repeating things is helpful and the pupil really needs to practise on a regular basis. I also hold a BSc(Hons) in Social Sciences with Social Policy if assistance is required in that field.
