In 2002 I obtained a degree in Zoology from Queens University Belfast. In October of the same year and at the same institution I started a PhD in molecular parasitology from which I graduated in 2006. From July 2006-July 2008 I was a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Calgary. From November 2008 to May 2009 I was a postdoc at the University of Liverpool. From May 2009 until August 2010 I was a postdoc at Trinity College Dublin where I studied inflammatory bowel disease and novel pharmacologies. I presented my work at international conferences and I have also published my work in scientific journals.
I left teaching in schools in April 2014 and since July 2014 I have been a molecular biologist at Almac Diagnostics in Craigavon where I validate diagnostic tests for cancers based on patient genetic profiling. Many of the techniques and technologies that I employ are required knowledge for the CCEA A-Level specification, especially at A2 level.
I obtained a PGCE in Biology with Science from Queens University Belfast in June 2011. During my PGCE I taught in two secondary and three grammar schools. I gained experience in teaching GCSE Single Science and Double Award Biology, as well as CCEA A-Level Biology and CCEA/EdExcel A-Level Health & Social Care. I have my own learning and teaching resources and have experience with A-Level Biology practicals and coursework. I mentor A-Level students for university interviews and I have an extensive archive of science magazines, news reports, videos and biology related books which I make available for students to read. I am also an A-Level and GCSE Biology examiner for the CCEA board which places me in a good position to enhance the examination technique of my students to obtain high grades
I have been tutoring A-Level CCEA Biology since January 2012 and I have enjoyed much success with numerous students. I have taught students from the following schools: Ballymena Academy, Loreto College, St Killian's Grammar, St Marys Grammar Magherafelt, Hunterhouse College, Our Lady & St Patrick's, Strathearn School, St Louis Grammar, St Malachy's College, Slemish College, Dalriada Grammar and Victoria College.
I am able to tutor CCEA AS and A2 Level Biology. I DO NOT tutor GCSE Biology.
I CANNOT HELP WITH AQA, OCR or EDEXCEL DUE TO A LACK OF EXPERIENCE WITH THESE BOARDS.
I have made all my own teaching resources which include informative PowerPoints and revision sheets which summarise the most critical parts of a topic which are needed to achieve excellent marks in an exam. I make constant use of past paper questions and hone students' examination technique, ensuring that they understand the meaning of a question.
I provide extra reading in the form of learning logs which are articles scanned from science magazines to which I subscribe. These not only enhance the knowledge a person holds about a topic and increases their scientific literacy (which is useful for interviews and for preparation for university courses) but also demonstrates how a topic is being used and expanded upon in real life situations, highlighting its importance and applicability to careers.
