Being in school is extremely difficult at the moment, and the new GCSE's for English in particular can be very challenging. I've worked in numerous schools whilst writing part time, and am currently taking time off to work on publishing a novel and various short stories. I tutor because I know very well how difficult school can be right now - I strive to give students the extra help they need in order to flourish in the current educational climate. I am a patient, calm and good-humoured individual. I've been told by numerous students that my jokes aren't funny, but I hold out hope that they're just saying that to sound cool.
I spent two years working in SEN schools, supporting students with the Functional Skills English exams, something I am extremely proficient in teaching. As well as this, my interest in imaginative writing gives me a vast knowledge of the English Language and the process of analysing and creating texts to a high standard. My teaching experience is covered in more detail below.
I have a wealth of experience working in both SEN and mainstream schools. I was a specialist education tutor at Archway Academy, working one-to-one with various students with a wide variety of needs. This includes students on the autistic spectrum, those with dyslexia and those with social, emotional and behavioural issues. I also worked as a Teaching Assistant at Selly Oak Trust School, one of the largest schools in the country catering purely to students with an EHC or with a Statement of Educational Needs. From here, I gained a wealth of knowledge from training courses and first-hand experience with how best to support pupils with a wide variety of needs. I also began a teacher training course at the beginning of this year, working towards a QTS, at Bartley Green School, where I gained knowledge and experience teaching the new English GCSE in a mainstream school environment. I have recently left this course in order to focus more on smaller groups of students in a supportive capacity.
I focus on addressing a subject from every angle until we decide what works best for the student. I work in partnership with my students, as they know better than anyone what works best for them. My prior experience means that I have a wealth of knowledge to support them if they have any additional needs, and am therefore particularly interested in helping students who are perhaps not able to access the extra help they need in school. In regards to what we will cover during tuition, this will depend on the needs of the student; I am able to offer places to focus on and improve upon, but if the student has a particular area they are not confident in, we will work together to help them progress.
