I have recently retired after 20 years of being an English teacher and, for the last five years, a deputy headteacher of a large comprehensive school. It has always been my dream to move back to the sea and I have now achieved that by moving to Cornwall. I am a positive, proactive person who loves my subject and who really enjoys passing on my passion for English language and literature to young people.
I have been an English teacher for 20 years and have taught at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. My students consistently perform above expectations, often achieving more than a grade above their predicted level. As well as teaching in the classroom, I have also taught students, at each Key Stage, on a one-to-one basis where I was able to focus on their particular needs and help them to overcome any specific hurdles they were facing. Results from this one-to-one work have always been extremely positive.
I have recently worked with students in other countries, via Skype, to help them with their SAT exam which is required to apply for American universities such as Yale and Harvard. This has been exciting and successful.
My aim is to help young people to enjoy the subject and to understand the ways in which they may improve their grades. My love of English - especially poetry! - communicates itself to the student and the majority of the students whom I have taught tell me that English has become their favourite subject. Once they understand what they need to do in order to achieve the top grades, improvement follows on quickly. I enjoy discussing ideas with my students - in English there is rarely a wrong answer and I find that students who are able to put forward their own ideas on texts and characters become more interested in the topic and achieve more highly in final examinations.
At A and AS Level, I offer English Literature, rather than Language.
