I hold an MA honours degree in Classics from Oxford University and I have been teaching in some of the country's top 10 secondary schools (up to A2) for the past few years (I hold a current CRB certificate). My current school is listed as top of the league table for the county, and my previous school is second!
Alongside teaching in schools,I have privately tutored adults and children for the past 9 years, in both Latin and Ancient Greek, taking them from absolute beginner through to gaining excellent GCSE, AS and A2 grades. I also have lots of experience in preparing children for the Common Entrance Exam (11 or 13+).
I am passionate about all things classical and enjoy passing on this enthusiasm to those that I teach. I believe that a language is best learned with understanding of the culture from which it sprang, and with this in mind, I pepper all my language lessons with supporting cultural references. Both Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome were such rich cultures that it would be a shame to learn their languages in isolation - plus, I have found that hearing about some relevant philosophy, art or literature aids both concentration and memory!
As well as teaching Latin, Ancient Greek and Class Civ, I also have tutored extensively in English. The grammar foundations and literary analysis demanded in a classical education are without par and I very much enjoy passing these on to students who are either struggling or looking to enhance their skills. I also have experience in teaching English as a foreign language.
I am happy to teach in my home in Central London or I can travel anywhere within London and the Herts/Essex border.
I charge £40-£60 an hour depending on the level of student and the time and distance to be travelled. References are available on request.
