Hi, I am a retired maths teacher living in the Brixham area. My educational background is Civil Engineering, (Bsc from Manchester University) and GTP in Mathematics through Exeter University. I have now retired from full time teaching and focus on private tuition.
I am married and have two sons, one currently at Plymouth University studying Occupational Therapy and the other is an IT specialist working in Torquay.
I am a keen sailor but also enjoy walking, running and fixing everything that breaks except computers!
I have taught mathematics in secondary schools since 2005 and privately since 2007. I am now semi-retired and focus on private tuition at both lower school (Key Stage 3) and GCSE from Foundation to Higher levels.
My students all enjoy my informal style of teaching and really get a big boost in confidence from my lessons, particularly if they are preparing for examinations. Examination technique and practice is a key area of focus. I encourage pupils to use mental maths whilst answering exam questions and get them to check that their answers are realistic. I will also show them for example, where it is possible, how to answer questions without a calculator even if the question is from a calculator paper.
The feedback I get from my students (and their parents) is that they have greatly improved confidence and enjoy their maths lessons more.
I teach from my home or at the students home depending on their preference and distance away.
