From the age of 11 up to 18 I studied at Manchester Grammar School. I excelled in the science subjects achieving As and A*s in all public examinations and subsequently went to study Biological Sciences and Christ Church, University of Oxford. After taking my gap year I achieved a Distinction MSc in Bioinformatics at University of Manchester. I played rugby for RRUFC for 3 years and for Manchester Grammar. I play a lot of sport and achieved grade 7 at the oboe. I balance my academic and sporting achievements with a lot of social time. People who only have academic records usually make poor teachers, as they fail to engage on a social level with the candidate; being social and having fun is therefore integral to an individual's success in academia.
I'm currently a senior software engineer focussing on blockchain technology, server side architecture and programming in a multitude of different languages. I also have outside business interests.
I've been a software engineer for over 10 years now. I began with Objective C and Node JS, and then, when moving company I began to focus on Ruby and Python - with a strong focus on data analytics and performance at scale. While automating market research I spent a lot of time mentoring and tutoring new employees to help bring them up to speed.
Alongside this, I built iOS and Android apps for a medical company in ionic, angular and then react native.
Now I spend most of my time, constructing Golang microservices and managing them across Kubernetes clusters using terraform to construct the infrastructure state. As well as this I write in solidity and manage the Ethereum workers that back a financial exchange. Here, performance and predictability is key and it constantly pushes my abilities.
I take each tutee individually. Some tutees require a more hands-on approach to help guide their understanding, especially at the beginning. As long as they are passionate to learn, then I'm happy to find the correct way to help tutor them.
During the process to make it enjoyable and exciting, otherwise there is no point in either one going through this process! In doing so I find where their weaknesses and limits in their understanding our and help guide them through problem solving and creating something of value (depdendent upon which aspect of software engineering we focus on, be it front end or back).
