I have been a private tutor for 6 years and moved to Devon from Surrey 5 years ago.
Prior to that, I was a theatre director, drama lecturer and teacher and playwright. I have worked in regional and touring theatres and larger theatres in London and the South East and my teaching work included Guildford School of Acting, The Royal Scottish Academy (now the Conservatoire), Rose Bruford and Italia Conti. I have also worked in the mental health sector and in Healing Arts.
I am a creative writer, have published one novel Removed, numerous short stories and am working on my second novel. I am a member of Exeter Writers.
For the past 7 years, I have taught English Language and Literature and Drama at GCSE, AS and A level and English as a Second Language (also know as TEFL - English as a Foreign Language) - the last to both private students and classes at TORQUAY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL (2016).
While in Surrey, I coached students for the English component of the American University SAT entrance exam.
My approach is to get to know the student, her/his strengths and weaknesses and which approach to learning will suit the individual best. If a student requires extra coaching, often their confidence and self-esteem need nurturing toward the belief that s/he can excel in the subject. Linking in to a student's creativity is a reliable path to both areas. My lessons are always enjoyable - I like students to improve their confidence but also to go away with smiles on their faces.
While I am not an expert in autism, I have taught several students on varying shades of the spectrum with successful outcomes.
I will consider travelling further for lessons of 90 mins or more. Please note that 'as the crow flies' can mean up to 10 miles by road and further if travelling to the North side of the Exe Estuary (travel charges 25p per mile).
