It's local school teacher Mrs BC here, providing 7+ / 11+ preparation, English, Maths and Science primary tuition, English Language/Literature and Biology tuition up to GCSE level (thanks to my previous career in the NHS) and English to non-native speakers. I am a highly experienced, fully qualified primary school teacher with over 20 years' experience in schools and a full (enhanced) DBS Certificate. In addition to being an exam marker, I am currently involved in the creation of test questions for both 11+ and SATs for several well-known teaching resource schemes. Originally from North Birmingham, I've been a resident of South Birmingham for over 15 years where I've made my home with my family, working in the local community as a school teacher and tutor.

Tutoring Experience

After qualifying as an Anatomical Pathology Technician with the Royal Institute of Public Health and Hygiene in 2000, I decided upon a career change, retraining as a Primary School Teacher and gaining Qualified Teacher Status in 2006. In 2007, I was part of a team researching the role of Visual Literacy in national schools and I was invited to present the findings of 2 years' of research at Birmingham City University. This research led to direct implementation of Visual Literacy concepts into the English curriculum in schools nationwide. These ideas have since been extended into every area of the National Curriculum. I have been an active teacher through the National Literacy Strategy, Primary National Strategy and all current government drives and requirements for the teaching of English.

In addition, I have extensive knowledge of the Mathematics curriculum, having taught through the National Numeracy Strategy, Primary National Strategy and through the curriculum reforms and most recent spotlight on maths mastery. I have also been Head of Science - including leadership responsibilities - working on the implementation of a more interactive knowledge and enquiry-based curriculum. My work has also included the role of school governor, working for 7 years on the creation and introduction of measures to support School Improvement Plans.

Tutoring Approach

I have a relaxed, yet thorough, approach to tutoring which depends on the exact needs of the student. Some students require 'gap-filling' for exams - or perhaps because a parent feels they have 'lost' too much learning as a legacy of the lockdowns. One of the first priorities, in this instance, would be to identify areas of weakness before introducing targeted teaching. Other students may be preparing for exams, whether 7+, 11+, SATs or GCSEs and will need to ensure curriculum coverage whilst developing question-answering techniques. Others may just need a little extra help with the ongoing demands of their school curriculum. Either way, I look forward to helping with any specific need!
