My name is Luis, I am a friendly and approachable 23 year old. I was born in Spain however, I have lived in the UK for the past 6 years and have spoken both English and Spanish since I was born. I have just graduated with a First Class Honours Master's Degree in Engineering Design from the University of Bristol - having obtained the highest overall mark in the Master's year out of the whole cohort.
I am currently working as a business analyst for strategy consulting firm Oliver Wyman. During my time at University I also undertook a summer placement at DCA Design (a boutique design consultancy) as well as a year long internship at RWE Innogy UK (a multinational renewable energy developer and operator).
I have a passion for all things science, specially mathematics - having obtained firsts in all the related modules and a 91% in the last engineering mathematics module. Similarly, I also find languages extremely interesting; aside from being bilingual in English and Spanish, I also have an intermediate level in French and Brazilian Portuguese.
Prior to this, I have tutored a lot of children at my local school over Christmas, Easter and Summer holidays. The children that came to the free tutoring events were often new and unaccustomed to receiving tutoring lessons (as due to space availability issues, the sessions were at different times/places, so other commitments proved restrictive), the group sizes varied and so did the age groups. Therefore, I am used to helping children of all ages with different levels of knowledge about the subject matter.
I have also provided tutoring for both University students and Experienced Hires who needed help with Management/Strategy Consulting entrance exams and case-study interview preparation.
Furthermore, when it comes to languages the age bracket goes into Master's degree students - both, helping with Spanish and English.
Having been a student for the past 19 years, I am well aware of the struggles a student can face. I find that making mistakes is often the best way to improve, therefore I will never be dissapointed if a student makes a mistake; in fact, I shall use that opportunity to shine light on why that answer is incorrect, in order for the student to understand why the answer is erroneous and thus avoid that mistake altogether in the future.
I also understand that each person has his or her own way of learning (e.g. read the theory and then carry out a lot of examples; slowly read the theory and talk through all the steps to ensure they are understood, improve examination technique and minimise errors, etc.), therefore I am more than happy to tailor the learning approach to meet each individual student's needs.
Similarly, I often find setting homework a useful approach as it helps to keep the student engaged in between school or tutoring lessons - however, this can be varied/removed depending on how much work the student already has through school commitments.
Nevertheless, no matter what approach is suitable - and therefore followed - I am keen to make the student do the thinking. This is the best way to encourage real, long-lasting learning as opposed to memorizing methods, for this I will aim to ask prompting questions so that the student is capable of structuring the solution without - eventually - the need for any help.
