Luis

My name is Luis, I am a friendly and approachable 24 year old with over 1500 hours of private tuition delivered - both nationally and internationally. I graduated with a First Class Honours Master's Degree in Engineering from the University of Bristol - having obtained the highest overall mark in the Master's year out of the whole cohort.

I am currently working as a Portfolio Manager at the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research council. I cover a wide portfolio ranging from next generation telecommunications through to artificial intelligence. Through this role I am continually exposed to the best, cutting edge research the UK has to offer, further improving my engineering knowledge.

Prior to that, I worked as a business analyst for strategy consulting firm Oliver Wyman. During my time at University I also undertook a summer placement at DCA Design (a boutique design consultancy) as well as a year long internship at RWE Innogy UK (a multinational renewable energy developer and operator).

I have a passion for all things science, specially mathematics - having obtained firsts in all the related modules and a 91% in the last engineering mathematics module. Similarly, I also find languages extremely interesting; aside from being bilingual in English and Spanish, I also have an intermediate level in French and Brazilian Portuguese.

Tutoring Experience

I have been tutoring for nearly a decade, having taught from post graduates down to GCSEs in a wide range of subjects. I adapt my teaching method to that of the student, as I am fully aware that we all learn best in different ways.

To this day I have tutored over 75 different individuals ranging from primary school children through to Master's degree students all of whom have kept me on until either their goal was met. A large number of these leads were obtained through referrals and word of mouth.

Prior to this, I helped a lot of children at my local school over Christmas, Easter and Summer holidays. The children that came to the free tutoring events were often new and unaccustomed to receiving tutoring lessons (as due to space availability issues, the sessions were at different times/places, so other commitments proved restrictive), the group sizes varied and so did the age groups. Therefore, I am used to helping children of all ages with different levels of knowledge about the subject matter.

I have also provided tutoring for both University students and Experienced Hires who needed help with Management/Strategy Consulting entrance exams and case-study interview preparation.

Tutoring Approach

Having been a student for nearly 20 years, I am well aware of the struggles a student can face. I find that making mistakes is often the best way to improve, therefore I will never be dissapointed if a student makes a mistake; in fact, I shall use that opportunity to shine light on why that answer is incorrect, in order for the student to understand why the answer is erroneous and thus avoid that mistake altogether in the future.

I also understand that each person has his or her own way of learning (e.g. read the theory and then carry out a lot of examples; slowly read the theory and talk through all the steps to ensure they are understood, improve examination technique and minimise errors, etc.), therefore I am more than happy to tailor the learning approach to meet each individual student's needs.

Nevertheless, no matter what approach is suitable - and therefore followed - I am keen to make the student do the thinking. This is the best way to encourage real, long-lasting learning as opposed to memorizing methods, for this I will aim to ask prompting questions so that the student is capable of structuring the solution without - eventually - the need for any help.

FURTHER INFORMATION:
Having been a tutor for over nearly a decade, I am fully aware that plans change at short notice. I am as flexible as possible and always happy to rearrange to a more convenient time - should the need arise. I am happy to discuss both A-Level and University options.

I hold an enhanced DBS certificate.
