I have a wide range of academic interests and qualifications and am particularly interested in the study of the universe (cosmology). I studied a BSc in Physics at Edinburgh University and later a Masters in Astrophysics at UCL. I was invited to return to UCL to learn to become an anthropologist in order to study a group in the Cosmology Department working on a high profile astronomy project called the Dark Energy Survey. Last year I worked on a PGCE in Physics with Science at the University of the West of England, Bristol. I am currently helping to research and edit a book on the Dark Energy Survey (not yet published).
I have been tutoring privately for four years and have recent experience working as a science teacher in schools: Gordano School in Portishead (rated Ofsted outstanding) and John of Gaunt School in Trowbridge. I also worked for a year in a Somali (Muslim) after school learning centre. I have a good track record in helping people to prepare for their GCSEs and am very well acquainted with all of the information in the AQA, Edexcel and OCR curricula. I know what is most important for tutees to learn in order to do well in their exams.
My approach is to boost the confidence of my tutees by working through the material slowly and carefully with them in a relaxed and encouraging way. I tailor the lessons to the level of the individual and can provide worksheets and question papers for them to try individually and then discuss with me. I help children to understand their school work, motivate personal study at all ages and guide preparation for exams. I aim to inspire real interest in maths, physics and chemistry by providing a wider background to the knowledge than is taught at school. I can help those who feel hopeless in a subject to shine, while also prepare the ground for A-levels for those wishing to continue with these subjects. Without support, many people find the transition to A-levels very challenging.
