I am an experienced English (Literature and Language) teacher in the independent sector with a first-class BA (Hons) from the University of Oxford. I am passionate about reading and writing, and particularly enjoy inspiring and enabling young people to take pleasure in their learning.
I have been tutoring (ages 6-13) for the past 9 years, and teach Years 7-13 at a prestigious and academically driven independent school. As a result, I am very familiar with the syllabuses and assessment objectives for these levels, and how best to improve reading and writing skills in order to attain the highest grades. I have a great deal of experience with both younger and older students, and really enjoy working with them on an individual basis in order to help them to understand concepts and techniques which they have not yet grasped in class.
Tutoring is about enabling students to think, analyse and connect ideas for themselves rather than telling them how to pass examinations. This skills-based educational enhancement means not only that they can adapt their knowledge to new questions, but will also be able to utilise these skills in the workplace.
I think that it is crucial to enthuse students about what they are studying, and also to encourage them to express themselves without fear of making mistakes as this instils confidence and enables swift development. Often, once this initial inhibition is cracked within the safe environment of a tutorial, the student is able to engage far more within a classroom setting.
