Personal Description:

Having recently graduated from the University of York with a degree in English, I am now studying at UCL for a Masters in modern English Literature.

My main interests are in academia and journalism. My hobbies include writing poetry, playing piano, writing lyrics and music for guitar, reviewing drama and poetry, singing and making documentaries. I also really enjoy travelling, experiencing new cultures and meeting new people.

Tutoring Experience:

During my A-levels, I was a mentor, academic and personal, for younger students at my school. I also coached lunchtime drama classes, and ran the school choir. In September 2014 and 2015, I returned to my former secondary school to coach the school's Youth Speaks team (for a public speaking competition). As a past speaker myself, I was able to come back and prep the team for interschool competitions, and they went on to reach the regional finals. I am keen to tutor public speaking again.

I have taught English Literature at secondary school level, both to GCSE candidates and A-level candidates and have also coached GCSE drama students as well as students preparing for drama and singing competitions outside of school.

Tutoring Approach:

I was lucky enough to be tutored myself during my GCSEs, so I am confident in my ability to recognise effective tutoring methods. My own approach is largely dependent on the needs of the pupil, to be considered in the first lesson. I am keen for my students to take a leading role where possible, suggesting topics for the lessons and identifying their own areas for improvement. I believe this is the most rewarding approach for the student. Having said that, I am equally happy to take the reins and lead the lesson entirely. The most important thing is that the student is comfortable with the way that the lessons are planned and taught. I think it is valuable to use set guide books and course books where available, but also to move away from these with more imaginative (often more creative) learning strategies to ensure that learning is enjoyable, fulfilling, new and challenging.
