Louise

Hi, I’m Louise. I am originally from South Wales but moved to Scotland for a new adventure and to be near our wider family five years ago. I live with my husband and two children and now, as the children are growing older, I have more time on my hands. I love the theatre, playing and listening to music and like to read any free moment I have. Since moving to Scotland, I have enjoyed exploring the wonderful landscape and travelling around, finding out more about this diverse country, its landscape and people.

Tutoring Experience

I am a lecturer in English and Core Skills. I have taught National 5 and Higher English, Nat 5 Application of maths, Core Skills in Numeracy and Literacy, ESOL and IELTS, Welsh Language, Business Studies and IT.

I specialise in supporting people with dyslexia and dyscalculia and I believe that, with a different approach, everyone can achieve their full potential. I have supported high school pupils in this way by setting goals and by designing targeted tasks and materials.

I also teach Primary 1 and 2 children to read, write and use numbers confidently and throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, I tutored primary aged children online via Skype and Zoom.

I am qualified in Literacy teaching and am experienced in working with a range of strategies to increase children’s understanding of phonics, their reading comprehension and fluency.

I have supported high school children who have been unable or reluctant to read for a number of reasons and using a structured and targeted approach, I have been able to increase their confidence and reading ability.

Working extensively with adults who are learning English means that I also have experience of teaching adults to read, write and speak more confidently, improving grammar and fluency and have prepared adults for national exams and for entrance to university.

Tutoring Approach

I want to inspire and enable people to reach their full potential and do this by setting clear goals and designing high quality resources which are tailored to the individual. I am positive, enthusiastic and creative and I am passionate about finding new ways to learn for those who may have encountered barriers to their learning or need an extra boost to master a particular subject area.

I pride myself in building good relationships with my students and I encourage students to be comfortable with getting things wrong – mistakes are great learning opportunities.

I have seen that extra, one to one sessions can increase a student’s confidence and with confidence comes a more relaxed attitude to study which makes it more likely that learning will take place.

In addition to this, motivation is key and so identifying where an individual wants to get to, whether that is the next school year, national exams, university or a job, and designing relevant, targeted learning materials, produces the best results.
