I have recently completed my PhD at The Courtauld Institute of Art in London - the world's leading centre for the study of History of Art, where I have also taught for two years. I am now working on my first book - a biography of the painter Edward Hopper, under contract with Yale University Press. My research on Hopper has earned international attention, with a discovery that his early oil paintings were all copies achieving headlines in The New York Times, The Times, The Art Newspaper, Sky Arts and more.
I am a first-class Courtauld graduate (MA, 2012) and have taught History of Art from the Renaissance to the present day. I offer private tuition in all periods and courses to GCSE, A-level, BA and MA students, as well as casual learners. I am also happy to advise on PhDs, Vivas, book projects, articles, interviews and job applications.
I have two first-class degrees from The Courtauld (MA) and the University of Bristol (BA). My PhD at the Courtauld was awarded AHRC funding by CHASE, as well as a Courtauld scholarship.
I also have several years of professional experience in the art world. I worked for 2 years in the press department at a leading commercial gallery in London, 1 year at a leading cultural PR agency where my clients included Tate, the Serpentine, the Royal Academy of Arts and Gagosian Gallery, and over a year as an Account Manager for an arts communications agency with clients including The Wallace Collection and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. I am very experienced in interviews and jobs applications and am happy to advise students in this area, particularly with regards to developing their CVs or practicing for interviews in the cultural sector.
At school, I completed 11 GCSEs, with 6 A*s and 4 As. At A-Level, I graduated with 4 A*s in English Literature, History, History of Art and Art.
I also work as a professional musician. Until recently I was in a successful band and was signed to a reputable record label for several years, during which time we toured across Europe.
Outside of professional life my passions include art, music, literature and film. I also travel regularly, particularly in America. As part of my doctorate, I have been invited to international symposia and conferences, as well as to museum archives across New York, Washington D.C. and Richmond, Virginia.
I have taught at The Courtauld Institute of Art for two academic years, teaching both BA and MA students. Courses included History of Art from 1500 to the present day, a specialist course in American modernism and a course dedicated to developing critical methodology. I have helped students develop their essays, presentations and theses, and have also helped them prepare for exams and job applications.
My approach is to understand a student's specific needs and help them to unlock their full potential. In general, I aim to stimulate their enjoyment in the subject, and to develop key skills such as developing an original voice, structuring an argument, critical thinking, independent research and visual literacy. History of Art is a subject I have been immersed in for over a decade, and my ultimate goal is to develop a passion for it in others, as well as to encourage them to embrace its most challenging and rewarding aspects.
